President Trump’s attack on Pope Leo is a disaster for American Catholics and for the world. It’s extremely ill-judged, even if I remain puzzled by the Pope’s failure to condemn Iran and baffling meeting with Axelrod. Is Trump entirely wrong about the one-sided and sometimes confusing character of Vatican foreign policy statements? No. Was he wrong to blaze away at the Pope in an apparent fit of temper? Absolutely.

Of course he is a politician He constantly amplifies the leftist, global agenda He never reiterates the Church’s teaching on the rights of the state to protect its borders, to defend against aggression, to punish criminals, including the death penalty He always amplifies woke, leftist talking points Therefore, President Trump is right to treat him as just another political opponent Pope Leo set the terms and tone of this political engagement He shouldn’t complain when he gets political pushback If you can’t take the heat, don’t stay in the kitchen
EWTN News@EWTNews

BREAKING: Speaking to reporters aboard the papal plane to Algeria on Monday, Pope Leo XIV said: “I think that the people who read will be able to draw their own conclusions: I am not a politician, I have no intention of entering into a debate with him. Rather, let us always seek peace and put an end to wars. I am not afraid of the Trump administration. I speak about the Gospel, I am not a politician. I do not think the message of the Gospel should be abused in the way some people are doing. I will continue to speak out loudly against war, to try to promote peace, multilateral dialogue between states in order to seek the right solution to problems. The message of the Church is the message of the Gospel, blessed are the peacemakers; I do not see my role as that of a politician, I do not want to enter into a debate with him. Too many people are suffering in the world.”

@kvallier Resignation is an extreme. Why not reamin in office and attempt some sort of compromise, reform, or reconciliation from within the administration?

I'm teaching a unit on democratic citizenship and religious conviction on Tuesday. Here's a question: you're VP Vance, a Catholic, and the President begins openly attacking the Pope. At what point does your faith require you to resign?
Commentary Donald J. Trump Posts From Truth Social@TrumpDailyPosts

𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗱 𝗝. 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗽 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝟬𝟵:𝟬𝟯 𝗣𝗠 𝗘𝗦𝗧 𝟬𝟰.𝟭𝟮.𝟮𝟲 Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy. He talks about “fear” of the Trump Administration, but doesn’t mention the FEAR that the Catholic Church, and all other Christian Organizations, had during COVID when they were arresting priests, ministers, and everybody else, for holding Church Services, even when going outside, and being ten and even twenty feet apart. I like his brother Louis much better than I like him, because Louis is all MAGA. He gets it, and Leo doesn’t! I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon. I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s terrible that America attacked Venezuela, a Country that was sending massive amounts of Drugs into the United States and, even worse, emptying their prisons, including murderers, drug dealers, and killers, into our Country. And I don’t want a Pope who criticizes the President of the United States because I’m doing exactly what I was elected, IN A LANDSLIDE, to do, setting Record Low Numbers in Crime, and creating the Greatest Stock Market in History. Leo should be thankful because, as everyone knows, he was a shocking surprise. He wasn’t on any list to be Pope, and was only put there by the Church because he was an American, and they thought that would be the best way to deal with President Donald J. Trump. If I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican. Unfortunately, Leo’s Weak on Crime, Weak on Nuclear Weapons, does not sit well with me, nor does the fact that he meets with Obama Sympathizers like David Axelrod, a LOSER from the Left, who is one of those who wanted churchgoers and clerics to be arrested. Leo should get his act together as Pope, use Common Sense, stop catering to the Radical Left, and focus on being a Great Pope, not a Politician. It’s hurting him very badly and, more importantly, it’s hurting the Catholic Church! President DONALD J. TRUMP

Cardinal Dolan and Bishop Barron are on President Trump’s religious liberty commission that meets tomorrow. They should both resign. We cannot allow the president to attack our pope without consequence.

The statements made by President Trump on Truth Social regarding the Pope were entirely inappropriate and disrespectful. They don’t contribute at all to a constructive conversation. It is the Pope’s prerogative to articulate Catholic doctrine and the principles that govern the moral life. In regard to the concrete application of those principles, people of good will can and do disagree. I would warmly recommend that serious Catholics within the Trump administration–Secretary Rubio, Vice President Vance, Ambassador Brian Burch, and others–might meet with Vatican officials so that a real dialogue can take place. This is far preferable to the statements on social media. I am very grateful for the many ways that the Trump administration has reached out to Catholics and other people of faith. It has been a high honor to serve on the Religious Liberty Commission. No President in my lifetime has shown a greater dedication to defending our first liberty. All that said, I think the President owes the Pope an apology.

I deleted my last question because it seems I have phrased it poorly. Second try: I recently saw an Orthodox priest making an argument against us Catholics, that in Catholicism, certain individuals are not given the holy Eucharist if they are too severely mentally disabled. Is that true? Is there such a teaching in Catholicism?

"Influential"? These guys are all Boomer liberals, Francis appointees who do not represent the mainstream of US Catholic opinion, and certainly not where the spiritual energy is among the laity. Nor the future of the Catholic Church in the US.
