So @matthew_barber appointed Chief Constable Jason Hogg, then suspended him and has now re-instated him whilst he's still being investigated by the IOPC. Not the way to re-build trust in policing.

Rape is appalling. But if someone is punished & jailed, don’t we have to let them rehabilitate once they emerge into society again if repentant? So I won’t be cheering on the Dutch beach volley-ball player, Van der Verde, but he should be able to compete in the Olympics.

There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics. Michelle and I are wishing him a quick recovery.

In the next couple of weeks we will see the latest official Police Workforce figures. From my FOI requests I was expecting under 6k SCs left (some forces actually ignored requests) Other sources are sayng 5800ish.
If this is the case we really do need to stop and take stock.

It’s a shame our discussions in Shadow Cabinet were leaked yesterday. If there is no private space to discuss our Party's challenges, we will never fully address what the electorate told us last week. The views of those outside these meetings matter too. Not just backbench MPs, but our party activists, members and friends who lost seats after giving everything to the campaign. In government, we had too much nodding along in the room and arguments outside it. That culture needs to change. We need to be honest with one another in private, and united in the direction we take afterwards.
