Hello X, Mister Peabody here, head of the Sugar Shack Time Travel Division. Today I'm taking Sugar Plus members back in time for a deep dive into Uncle Tom's Cabin, published in 1852. New member sign-ups are just $1.00 a month. Other notable events that happened today include:
1852 — Harriet Beecher Stowe's influential anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin was published in book form (after running as a serial). It became a massive bestseller and played a major role in shifting public opinion against slavery in the U.S., helping fuel the path to the Civil War.
1969 — John Lennon married Yoko Ono in Gibraltar. The couple famously spent their honeymoon staging a "Bed-In for Peace" in Amsterdam.
1995 — Members of the Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo released sarin nerve gas on the Tokyo subway during rush hour, killing 12 people and injuring thousands in one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in modern Japanese history.
2003 — U.S.-led coalition forces (primarily American and British troops) invaded Iraq from Kuwait, marking the start of the Iraq War (initially called Operation Iraqi Freedom).
