Back in 2017, my siblings, cousins, and I went to welcome the new wife of one of our favorite uncles.
After the visit, everyone went back home. Not long after, my mum called me: “Aunty said you and your brothers should all come back, she prepared food for you people.”
Omo, see me running to my cousins’ place to pass the good news. Food is involved? Say no more 😂We all rushed back, very excited.
We got there… our uncle wasn’t even at home. Just the new wife.....Next thing....plot twist......No food.....Nothing.
Aunty said she couldn’t find the ₦1,500 her husband gave her after we left earlier… and she wanted to “confirm” that none of us took it.
Before we could even process what was happening, she started searching all of us. One by one.....For one whole hour.......Over ₦1,500.....Only for her to later find the money… right there, under a tray on the dining table.
Something just died inside all of us that very day!
That was the last time we ever stepped into our favorite uncle’s house. Even when she gave birth, nobody showed up....not at the hospital, not after.
Some things…...once broken, no be apology fit fix am!

I’ve been a feminist since the time I was in my mother’s womb. I don’t have a pre-feminist era.
For context, when I was a child, I asked my mum why my father used a wash basin after eating and why no one served her a wash basin since she was also an adult, so I would intentionally not carry my father’s wash basin when they gave it to me, so that he could wash his hands direct from the tap after eating like everyone else. I also told them I wouldn’t be getting married, I would adopt a kid. I was less than 10. I also use to randomly ask my mother to get a divorce 😂 for no reason mind you, I just couldn’t fathom why she would want to “submit” to her agemate.

My friend lost his job last September. Luckily, he had already paid this year rent and stocked up on food before things got bad. He has been searching for a new job, but nothing has come through, so he started learning video editing online to stay productive. Interestingly, he was the one who got his wife her current job. Since he lost his, she had been supporting him in her own little way at least financially until she stylishly stopped. Yet, he didn’t quarrel or question her. He then noticed that since last month, anytime she came back from work, she wouldn’t cook or even ask if he had eaten. This happened repeatedly until he finally asked her why. Her response? “Why can’t you cook too? You’re always at home doing nothing. Do you expect me to come back from work and still stress myself because you want to eat?” He's been eating outside since.
