Virginia is a land born out of necessity, and she flourishes on the hard work, difficulties and sacrifice of those who are faithful enough to steward her. Through famine, horrendous attacks from savages, and harsh winters, dauntless settlers carved a home out of the dense forests, lush swamps, and ancient mountains. Today, as Virginians, we honor the selfless acts of these settlers, who carried the weight of the free world upon their shoulders. The birth of a new homestead, Virginia, brought from just one hundred and four brave souls aboard the Discovery, the Godspeed, and the Susan Constant, sparked the greater birth of the most powerful nation on the planet, America. Do you love Virginia? Do you want to have Virginia back? We're working on it. You're invited.

#WashingtonWednesdays How long has George Washington been on our currency? George starts showing up on coins in the early 1780s, before his presidency and despite rejecting the idea altogether. Due to his worldwide celebrity status, he also ended up on legal tender coins in other countries, including the Philippines 10 Peso series from the 1900s-1940s, and the Liverpool halfpenny and North Wales halfpenny in the 1790s. He briefly appeared on "five cent coins" (not to be confused with nickels) before being upgraded to the Quarter Dollar coin in 1932, where he remains today. He appears twice on South Dakota's state quarter (2006) which depicts Mt. Rushmore on the reverse. As for notes, his likeness started appearing on Confederate bank notes in 1861, to be followed by Union compound bank notes later in the 60s. The official $1 series started in 1869, as well as 10 cent and half dollar notes. His portrait has been included on every $1 federal reserve note since 1963. Why Washington? He was revered as a nonpartisan hero of American history, and a unifying force of justice. It seemed like the obvious choice, despite his aversion to the idea. Pictured: 1783 Washington Piece

One hundred and sixty-five years ago today, a man named Abram Faulkner motioned to bring an ordinance to the floor of the Virginia Secession Convention. The convention had been arguing for weeks over the issue of seceding from the union, with the vast majority (about 100 out of 152) arguing in favor of remaining with the Union. However, with the recent invasion of South Carolina at Fort Sumter, and an alarming call to violent action by President Lincoln, the Virginia Secession Convention swiftly changed its mind. After the Reverend opened with a prayer of praise to the Almighty, asking for wisdom and guidance, Abram Faulkner motioned to bring an ordinance sponsored by former U.S. President John Tyler to the floor. President of the convention and hard-line unionist John Janney humbly recognized the motion and put it before the delegates. In just a few short hours, the men voted 88 to 55 for freedom from tyranny, for Virginia to formally secede from the union. Just two days after the vote, the Confederate flag flew above the capitol building in Richmond. Confederate troops were invited to occupy the city, and state militias were activated. Virginia would later ratify secession by popular vote in May. Sometimes, it is required of a strong man to make tough decisions for the sake of his homeland and kinfolk. Those tough decisions aren't to be taken lightly, but they are nonetheless necessary for the preservation of truth. What tough decisions are you making in your personal life to be the best leader you can be? Are you actively seeking the truth? Sic Semper Tyrannis. Virginians Lead the Way.

#WashingtonWednesdays The buildup of the Continental Army continues as Washington develops a stronger fighting force following the siege of Boston. He worries a British attack on New York is imminent, and is so confident of this that he sends a detachment of six regiments to March south to New York posthaste, with the rest of the army soon to follow. He writes to John Hancock: The importance of that place is so obvious, that I think no time is to be lost in making every possible preparation for its defence… It is of the utmost consequence to secure it, as the Enemy will most assuredly make it their grand object.”
