A key but often overlooked factor in rising youth NEET rates I think is the increase in young people staying at home with their parents for longer. It provides a comfortable safety net incl perhaps no or little rent, lower living costs, family support etc, which will inevitably reduce the urgency to find work or training compared to previous generations who had to become independent much earlier and/ or found it easier to get a council house. In general I don’t think we encourage young people to be independent anymore and they’re kept immature for longer than in previous generations.

I’m so f*ck*ng tired of the UK film industry’s pure unadulterated contempt for anything Black that does not fit their colonising gaze.
And before you go there Sinners was a global release from a major. They had no choice! They still managed to find a way to tarnish the film with that unforgivable BAFTA / BBC stunt and bang on and on about how OBAA was better. It was not!

I have genuine concerns about Valentina coming to this country. The fact that the @ukhomeoffice is tagged in this alarming tweet after visa approval is flagrant. She poses a considerable threat to the safety of British Muslims and British Black & Brown people. Where is the line?

I don't know if I ever had a clear vision of 50, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been my life as it is now. But this life is rich in ways I could never have imagined or planned, and most of that came to be over my 40s, so I'm excited to see what comes next.

Statement regarding recent media reports: Frank Hester accepts that he was rude about Diane Abbot in a private meeting several years ago but his criticism had nothing to do with her gender nor colour of skin. The Guardian is right when it quotes Frank saying he abhors racism, not least because he experienced it as the child of Irish immigrants in the 1970’s. He rang Diane Abbott twice today to try to apologise directly for the hurt he has caused her, and is deeply sorry for his remarks. He wishes to make it clear that he regards racism as a poison which has no place in public life.
