Wait for it… Busara has her own mic drop moment.
Her name means ‘wise’ in Swahili – a fitting moniker for a little elephant who has already overcome so much. Orphaned during the height of a drought, Busara was at death’s door when she arrived at our Voi Unit. We placed her in a quiet stockade and immediately administered drips. For many hours, she didn’t even have the strength to lift her head. Today, she’s fully recovered, with the strength to lift her own bottle to feed herself!
Discover more about her recovery, which was made possible by supporters like you, who funded IV drips, specialist milk and Keeper care: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/busara

Dumbass, We were never trying to challenge the "underlying systems" in Cracker. By 1992 punk rock was dead, and most of fanzines were dominated by pretentious rich kids posing as stalinists. It was so fucking boring we decided to just play rock. (Also I believe both the Box O Laffs cassette and CVB demos were favorably reviewed by MRR. I also distributed hard copies of MRR in Santa Cruz).
CSTB@cstbtweet
dude’s band - the unfortunately named “Cracker”, really did a bang up job of “challenging underlying systems” during their turgid, radio plugger-assisted run. please don’t ask him to name 3 writers for MRR

Imagine writers at 80s zines like Maximum Rock-n-roll, Flipside, Forced Exposure, or Bucketfull of Brains defending radio pay‑to‑play. That would have been absurd, because those publications defined themselves against exactly that sort of industry corruption. Today’s so‑called ‘indie’ rock culture, by contrast, rarely challenges the underlying systems at all. Its rebellion is mostly cosmetic: gross, nihilistic gestures rather than any real structural opposition. It’s a degraded form of counterculture: it wears the costume of resistance while living in a mutually beneficial relationship with the same institutions it pretends to resist.
I say this as a 65 year old semi retired indie rocker who is much more interested in plain old regular culture rather than counterculture. I just think it's really funny what has happened.

I need to bet on this shit in the prediction markets.

@Spirometer @davidclowery You’re 4:40 older than me. And obviously cooler: I discovered DL through Cracker radio play/MTV, so 1992-93

I find it hilarious that about once a week I can retweet an Eric Alper tweet with “probably me” and it’s at least mildly funny.
