The disagreement between Vatican and SSPX to ordain new bishops is deeper than "Latin Mass vs Novus Ordo." The real issue is doctrine. The Vatican's position, especially under recent Popes, is that doctrinal unity must come first before structural recognition. This simply means that: Rome cannot approve new SSPX bishops while the SSPX still publicly rejects important teachings of the 2nd Vatican Council. What are the teachings of Vatican II? 1. "Dignitatis Humanae (1965)" - a declaration on religious liberty. Vatican II taught that: - Every human person has dignity and free will. - Nobody should be forced into religion against their conscience. - The state should not coerce people in religious matters. - Even those in error (Non-Catholics, atheists, etc.) have civil right not to be punished by this government simply for their beliefs, as long as public order is maintained. This does NOT mean all religions are true. It means civil coercion in religion is wrong. SSPX is saying that this clashes with earlier Church teachings where previous Popes strongly condemned modern liberal ideas of "religious liberty" and "liberty of conscience" as they were understood in secular society. Traditional Catholic teaching historically held that: - The Catholic Church is the one true religion. - Error has no positive rights. - Catholic states could restrict false religions when possible. Therefore the SSPX believes Vatican II introduced a rupture influenced by modern liberalism and separation of Church and state. On the other hand, Rome rejects that interpretation. Vatican II did not contradict the past, but developed doctrine by distinguishing: - Objective truth (Catholicism is true). - From civil immunity from coercion (people should not be forced by the state into belief). And this is why the bishop issue matters so much. This disagreement (along with ecumenism and collegiality) is why the Pope won't easily grant SSPX new bishops. I will conclude by saying, if Rome freely grants SSPX new bishops while these doctrinal disputes remain unresolved, it will look like the Church is approving a parallel authority that openly challenges parts of an Ecumenical Council.

Je suis heureux que le Saint Père lance cet ultime appel à la FSSPX pour qu’elle ne procède pas à des sacres d’évêques illicites que l’Eglise a toujours condamnée. Autant il est légitime de demander, dans la mesure où c’est possible, la célébration de la messe selon l’ancien rite, autant il est impossible à un catholique de refuser l’enseignement d’un Concile œcuménique tenu régulièrement, présidé et surtout approuvé et signé par le Pape. Vatican Il a été présidé successivement par Jean XXIII puis par Paul VI , tous deux canonisés, et ce Concile continua à être cité en référence par tous les Papes qui ont suivi jusqu’à Léon XIV inclus. Le refuser place « de facto » en dehors de l’Eglise catholique. Les sacres illicites et le rejet de Vatican Il marquent à l’évidence un grand mépris du Magistère, et cela est triste !

Today, the Mass was denied to me in Ávila (Spain). I am the chaplain of a pilgrimage group from the United States. This pilgrims usually attend the Traditional Latin Mass, so they wanted to be accompanied by a priest who would celebrate in the Old Rite. We had the chapel booked, but we were told that this rite required authorization from the Bishop. I went to the Episcopal Curia to request the authorization, so the Mass could take place. However, the Bishop, not to me personally, but through the Vicar General, categorically stated: “That Mass is prohibited in this diocese.” Prohibited why? And by what authority? Has this rite been abrogated? I was going to celebrate it in a chapel with the group of pilgrims. What harm could possibly come to the world? The rite is exactly the same one used in the convents of the Discalced Carmelites, stemming from the reform of Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross. The rite was good for those great saints, but now it is bad for us? The Code of Canon Law - Canon 932 §1 - prohibits Masses outside of sacred places, except in cases of necessity: “The Eucharistic celebration must be carried out in a sacred place unless, in a particular case, necessity requires otherwise; in that case, it must be celebrated in a decent place.” In this case, there was no necessity to celebrate the Mass in a hotel room, since we were surrounded by chapels and churches with beautiful altars (that are almost never used). The necessity was created by the Bishop himself, who, instead of promoting sacred things, decided to prohibit them. Who benefited from the Mass being celebrated in a profane place? Was Our Lord more praised in a hotel room than He would have been in a church? Were the souls of the faithful more edified by seeing a table serving as an altar? It is normal for people to be scandalized by these tyrannical and anti-pastoral decisions, especially from those who claim that everyone is welcome in the Church. But not everyone is. That is quite clear. I have gone through several similar episodes before and remained silent. But this must be denounced, this cannot be the normal state of the Church. Pope Leo must act quickly to put an end to these abuses of authority.
