Back in 2016, VMare Office of the CTO funded Cloud-Exchange, a project that delivered distributed cloud resources using self-auctioning systems and policy based placement across private and public Cloud, all with seamless VM vMotion. The economics were compelling but the resource pain was not severe enough to drive adoption and leadership took a bet on centralized approaches at the time. Now, with LLM resources breaking budgets, power and heat, there's a new reason to drive distributed AI.
