This is my town, Loughborough, a couple local YouTubers have done similar videos recently. The nightlife has gone for many reasons, but mostly because in our town it relies on a lot of students going out, which they no longer do. The local shopping mall “carillon court” has 50% occupancy rate because the owner of the building wants to convert it into flats. The council have lost the plot and have been pedestrianising it more and more over the years. We sit only 20mins between Leicester, Nottingham & Derby, three big cities where big chain stores will always gravitate towards when they have to make cuts. So Loughborough is a great representation of the state of the country for SMEs and how the govt (national and local) treats them. The population of the town is bigger and bigger every year as house building in the town has only accelerated over the years, there is no exodus of residents, only an exodus of retail. Yes, the pandemic accelerated people getting used to buy online through Amazon, (we have a huge distribution centre 15mins away next to the international airport with its own Rail connection for goods distribution) But ultimately, the council prefers to make decisions that make the thought of going into town to buy something much more of a chore than it used to be. With or without Amazon and Tesco around and the government doesn’t want financially independent small business owners making money.
