The whole “Manchester United are looking for public funding to rebuild Old Trafford” angle from certain outlets is a deliberate attempt to warp the truth. What #MUFC are specifically doing is demanding regeneration of the local area around the footprint of Old Trafford. You know, all those areas in the North impacted by government cuts to local councils and services? The mysterious ‘levelling up’. No one at United is asking for taxpayers cash. It’ll be a public & private endeavour. If this regeneration project was in the south-east or Greater London, the national press would not be complaining. Who paid for the transport links around Spurs and Arsenal’s stadiums? Just the clubs? Nope. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is no saint. INEOS are a private company with plenty of questions to answer. However, they’re not trying to access your money to build a new football stadium. Journalists claiming this need to be fact-checked. Suddenly they’re interested in United’s level of debt? They weren’t interested enough while the Glazers plundered the club for over a decade.
