Carnegie Mellon’s literature PhD is being liquidated in favor of “computation,” casualized labor, and AI. That has profound ramifications for, students, faculty, and program alums like myself. I wrote it about it (w/ Catherine Evans, a current PhD student).

@libshipwreck I’ve had a similar experience teaching literature this summer. Not that I’m teaching anything obscure but the more contemporary novels, and one novel in translation, seem beyond the grasp of ChatGPT (my students’ preferred LLM).

I should also note that I am not saying all, or even most, of my students are using AI. Most of them aren’t! But, unfortunately, some are, and the way their work looks totally different if they’re responding to a canonical text vs. an obscure one makes their AI use obvious.

I’m teaching a class this summer. Something I’m noticing is that some students (not all!) are clearly using AI, but it only works when students are responding to well-known/canonical material. When they have to respond to more obscure stuff the AI doesn’t know what to tell them.
