The 16th amendment didn't give the feds that power "the provisions of the Sixteenth Amendment conferred no new power of taxation but simply prohibited the previous complete and plenary power of income taxation possessed by Congress from the beginning from being taken out of the category of indirect taxation to which it inherently belonged"

🚨The IRS should never be used as a political weapon. Yet somehow, here we are. That should not be controversial. Congressman Warren Davidson introduced a resolution to repeal the 16th Amendment, the amendment that gave the federal government the power to tax income. As of now, it has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee, with no clear sign of further action. His argument is simple: If the IRS can be used by whichever party is in power, then the problem is not just bad leadership. The problem is the weapon itself. We have seen this concern for decades. Richard Nixon had an enemies list. Donald Trump faced years of aggressive IRS scrutiny before becoming president. Later, a former IRS contractor illegally leaked Trump’s tax records, along with taxpayer data belonging to thousands of others. That contractor was sentenced to five years in prison. So this is not just theory. It happened. And it does not only run in one political direction. Under the Biden administration, IRS whistleblowers Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler raised concerns about how Hunter Biden’s tax case was handled. They said the case received treatment ordinary taxpayers would never get. Then they were punished for speaking out. Treasury later brought them back and said they had been wrongfully targeted. That should bother everyone. Republican. Democrat. Independent. Anyone who files a tax return. Because the real issue is bigger than one president, one party, or one case. The question is this: Should any government agency have the power to audit, punish, delay, expose, or pressure citizens based on politics? Most taxpayers are not famous. They do not have lawyers on standby. They cannot fight the federal government for years. They just get a letter from the IRS and panic. That is why this matters. If the IRS has that much power, then it has to be held to an extremely high standard. • No favoritism. • No retaliation. • No leaks. • No selective enforcement. • No political games. Because once tax enforcement becomes political, nobody is safe. Not the rich. Not the powerful. And definitely not ordinary taxpayers!

Sustainability aside, jo successful company that is doing well, completely rewrites their entire business model. Introduce new plans side by side with their long running ones? Sure. Hit delete on existing and introduce an entirely new set of plans and rulesets they have little to no experience with in order to evaluate both conversions and payouts? Nah. This is a hail mary for them

Lol the Pentagon factored it in for OpenAI the same night. Apparently identical terms. In writing. And the "example" being made here isn't "comply or else." It's "comply or else, unless you're a different company, in which case we'll agree to the same thing." 1k+ people liked this brainrot celebrating a standard it then abandoned Y'all are wild

This Anthropic Issue comes down to, Their software is used in some of our weapons systems, they changed the "user agreement" to say - if you are shooting at someone we dont agree with you on - we will remotely disable that system. They are wrong - and should be bankrupted for it.

"A private company was essentially demanding final say over US defense policy." No. A private company asked the government to put two things in writing. The government said no to Anthropic, then said yes to OpenAI. That's picking a winner because one publicly and firmly set their own line in the sand

Correct. People acting like Anthropic achieved some moral victory for the ages just aren’t getting it. A private company was essentially demanding that it have final say over US defense policy. It’s a very good thing for the DOW to set the standard that they won’t bow to the demands of wannabe technocrat overlords.

Tonight, we reached an agreement with the Department of War to deploy our models in their classified network. In all of our interactions, the DoW displayed a deep respect for safety and a desire to partner to achieve the best possible outcome. AI safety and wide distribution of benefits are the core of our mission. Two of our most important safety principles are prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems. The DoW agrees with these principles, reflects them in law and policy, and we put them into our agreement. We also will build technical safeguards to ensure our models behave as they should, which the DoW also wanted. We will deploy FDEs to help with our models and to ensure their safety, we will deploy on cloud networks only. We are asking the DoW to offer these same terms to all AI companies, which in our opinion we think everyone should be willing to accept. We have expressed our strong desire to see things de-escalate away from legal and governmental actions and towards reasonable agreements. We remain committed to serve all of humanity as best we can. The world is a complicated, messy, and sometimes dangerous place.

You've made their case for them If the carve outs are "already illegal per US law," then the admin blew up a contract, designated an American company a supply chain risk, and had the President threaten "major civil and criminal consequences" rather than agree to put "we won't do the illegal things" in writing.

Anthropic is virtue signaling. Their carve-outs were already illegal per US law. They just want to look like they're *doing something* when the only thing they're doing is trying to command the US military, which they have no right to do. If they don't want the military using their stuff maybe they shouldn't do business with the DOD.
Shaun Maguire@shaunmmaguire

I’m confused about this Anthropic feud It seems like it started after concerns were raised that Anthropic was unhappy its tech was used in the Maduro raid But now the discourse is about a surveillance state? Using AI to plan a mission != mass surveillance What am I missing?

the government bypassed every democratic institution here. No congressional debate, no hearing and no due process. Secdef issued an ultimatum on X. The President attacked the company on social media. Declared, without authority, supply chain risk with no notice. Accountability was literally violated by the gov itself.

@asynchronous_x as a "former contractor that made software for the Feds," you should know that contract terms are negotiated before award, and that the government modifying its demands post award is a different situation than a vendor pulling a bait and switch.

DoW’s order is also contradictory. It says Anthropic can work with DoW for 6 months to allow a seamless transition. But every other company that works with DoW (eg AWS, MSFT, NVDA, any big bank) must stop working with Anthropic immediately. That wont allow a seamless transition.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth@SecWar

This week, Anthropic delivered a master class in arrogance and betrayal as well as a textbook case of how not to do business with the United States Government or the Pentagon. Our position has never wavered and will never waver: the Department of War must have full, unrestricted access to Anthropic’s models for every LAWFUL purpose in defense of the Republic. Instead, @AnthropicAI and its CEO @DarioAmodei, have chosen duplicity. Cloaked in the sanctimonious rhetoric of “effective altruism,” they have attempted to strong-arm the United States military into submission - a cowardly act of corporate virtue-signaling that places Silicon Valley ideology above American lives. The Terms of Service of Anthropic’s defective altruism will never outweigh the safety, the readiness, or the lives of American troops on the battlefield. Their true objective is unmistakable: to seize veto power over the operational decisions of the United States military. That is unacceptable. As President Trump stated on Truth Social, the Commander-in-Chief and the American people alone will determine the destiny of our armed forces, not unelected tech executives. Anthropic’s stance is fundamentally incompatible with American principles. Their relationship with the United States Armed Forces and the Federal Government has therefore been permanently altered. In conjunction with the President's directive for the Federal Government to cease all use of Anthropic's technology, I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a Supply-Chain Risk to National Security. Effective immediately, no contractor, supplier, or partner that does business with the United States military may conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic. Anthropic will continue to provide the Department of War its services for a period of no more than six months to allow for a seamless transition to a better and more patriotic service. America’s warfighters will never be held hostage by the ideological whims of Big Tech. This decision is final.

Secdef gave a CEO a 5-day ultimatum, the President called the company radical left on social media, and then they invoked a statute designed for foreign adversaries to blacklist an American company for maintaining terms of service on its own product. ...but the company is the one with the god complex? ...

Pretty easy for Anthropic to win its lawsuit against the Pentagon. “If we were such a supply chain risk why did you declare our services critical?” Slam dunk for Anthropic.

Freedom of speech is not a complicated issue when you frame it as a property right Your freedom to say whatever you want ends at the point you are violating someone else's property rights Yell "fire" in a crowded theater? That's fraud, causing monetary damages to the theater. Property right violation. Yell a mean word or insult at someone? No violation of anyone else's rights, so you're good to go. All true rights are property rights.
