Here are some of my predictions for the future. These are based on vibes and intuition, not careful analysis, so may be worthless, although I am willing to bet money on them. I've grouped them into 3 themes, in decreasing order of confidence: AI, US Politics, and Global Issues

Scene Flow promises to be a catch all solution for open-world detection of moving objects, but in practice they fail on the second most common class in AV datasets pedestrians! Solving this is the goal of this year's Argoverse 2 Scene Flow challenge! argoverse.org/sceneflow 🧵👇

We’ve been waiting for this moment and now we can share it with you: Today, we received our paid driverless permit from the CPUC! In the coming weeks, we’ll begin charging fares for rider-only trips and welcoming new riders into Waymo One in San Francisco. waymo.com/blog/2023/08/w…

Also, it took a while but we tried our best to get all the metric details right -- the Pose Estimation Metric service is up, with a compelling new metric suitable for our in-the-wild domain. The code for the metric, and more, has been pushed to github: tinyurl.com/3j42w2ar

The only rational move is to ignore all such pronouncements, much like you should have ignored all such pronouncements in 2021 and 2022. News worth paying attention to is not deliberately formulated to induce strong (negative) emotional responses.

They're almost certainly doing deep learning based super resolution -- which brings up an interesting question. It's not "enhancement" of the original, as the details are dreamed up by the model (in this case overfit to moon images). At what point does it become "replacement"?
Halide + Kino aka halideapp.bsky.social@halidecamera

Reddit user ibreakphotos discovers that Samsung's 'Space Zoom' simply replaces user's moon photos with higher-res images of the moon through a clever testing process. reddit.com/r/Android/comm… This isn't computational photography — it's inserting imagery that simply isn't there.

@fchollet Who exactly is saying that you ought to be in SF to do AI???? Can you provide a reference. I am genuinely curious.

The notion that "if you do AI, you have to be in San Francisco" is narcissistic BS. Easily >90% of the people who are pushing AI forward aren't located in SF. In fact it's likely >95%.
