@AoDespair I really enjoyed the @ErniePyleMuseum and reading his letters at Lilly at @IUBloomington. His America columns are still my favorite. Though the business has changed, I think he would still appreciate the grit and determination of the many reporters who continue to do good work.

Been to Hawaii thrice. Each time I visit the Punchbowl, find the grave and say a quick Kaddish. On this visit, though, I thought about what Ernie Pyle, who wrote truly of ordinary men enduring the extraordinary, would think of journalism today, in our post-fact, clickbaited era.

On days like today Baltimore tourists deserve thank you goodie bags for coming to the Inner Harbor. They should have in them pints of Taharka Brothers and portable fans.

The first half of 2024 in Baltimore ended with 89 homicides, the second fewest to start a year on record (since 1970). Just two years ago saw the worst first half on record, with 179 killings. That's a two-year drop of more than 50 percent

What we know about the Key Bridge collapse from morning news conference (follow @emilyopilo for more): -Unknown how many people or vehicles are in the water. -Also unknown whether fuel spilled. Crews have been smelling diesel. -Some people were pulled from water. Water is diveable. -No sign bridge was intentionally hit, Baltimore police commissioner says.
