WAR IS BEING HYPERNORMALISED, by B. Duncan Moench (@DuncanMoench) Everything about the Trump era has been characterised not by comedy, but what late-stage Soviet anthropologist Alex Yurchak called ‘hypernormalisation’, a concept which describes the idea that during the later stages of a dying empire, politics becomes defined by bureaucratic ritualism, ideological decay, and surreal, performative politics. ‘Hypernormalisation’ played out in the context of the Soviet Union, where all the elites knew that the leadership was lying and, eventually, by the early to mid-Eighties, Soviet citizens did too. The fraud of the whole system was obvious and undeniable. But nearly everyone went along with the charade anyway, because there was simply nothing else to be done. My fellow Americans: we are here. Nearly everyone has given up on the idea that American politics is anything other than the theatre of the absurd. Who, besides the most MAGA diehards, believe that the war in Iran is necessary, much less worth its absurd economic consequences? And while we now live in a society that knows what is happening, knows it is absurd, and knows it cannot last, the great tragedy is our collective desire to continue behaving as if everything is perfectly normal. We need to bring back the word “firefax” to describe people with red hair. In Old English it was fȳrfæx, or ‘having locks of flame’.

Please share. Percy is looking for a home to spend his twilight years as he going into kennels in Wimborne Dorset on Monday Sadly his owner is in hospital and is not coming home. There may be a person on X who has room in their hearts and a sofa to share with this boy.

Tracey Emin’s new exhibition is a must-see. It’s hard-edged, brutally honest and profoundly moving. The one-time enfant terrible of modern art has become one of its greatest practitioners. Her work forces us to look at ourselves anew, says Gawain Towler buff.ly/iu2dxHS

This perfectly preserved ancient tree fossil offered scientists an unprecedented view into a moment 42,000 years ago when the Earth’s magnetic field went haywire. The ancient kauri tree in New Zealand has provided a record of the Laschamp excursion, a temporary reversal of Earth's magnetic poles. During this event, the magnetic field weakened to 28% of its strength, exposing the planet to intense cosmic radiation.

The magnificent "Crimea" oak in Althorp Park this foggy morning. This huge oak is so called because at the time of the Crimean war 1853 - 1856 The Royal Navy tried to buy her for ship building. She is 650 years old. Conservation@althorp.com #Spencerestates #oaktrees #History
