Maybe it’s because he needed a justification for the genocide of the Palestinians. And the land grab of GAZA, West Bank, and Lebanon to fulfill his “Greater Israel” fantasies. This is surreal and deeply disturbing. Ethnic hatred, supremacism, righteousness, violence and impunity bred into children. The smaller teenage kid practices his right to violence like a trainee, then steps back to look around for backup, approval and protection. Horrific.

All that remains is hope. What else do we have? All the foundational values we believed had been built here over generations are crumbling beneath hatred and vengeance. Where in the world is it acceptable to erase entire communities and rejoice in it? It is not only in Gaza — now it is in Lebanon as well. Where do people open bottles of champagne to celebrate a “democratic” approval to take human life, even if those lives are the lives of terrorists, prisoners, or detainees? In what democratic country are tax revenues paid to people so that they may grow up in ignorance and poverty, without basic education, unable to contribute to society or to themselves in the modern world? In what place in the world does support grow for an entire sector of society that shouts “We shall die, but we will not enlist”? As the spring season breaks forth, and on the day of our festival of freedom, we must ask: What am I prepared to do to remove evil and wickedness from our lives? What am I prepared to do to drive governmental corruption from our midst? What am I prepared to do to prove that there is no hatred in my heart? What are we, as a people and as a society, prepared to do in order to save the State of Israel? I do not want to become Sparta. I do not want to become a super-Sparta. I do not want our neighbors to fear us, lest we go out to expel them or destroy their homes and their lives. I do not want to see anyone hanged. I want to hang my frail hope on this alone — that it is still possible to live in a country that sanctifies the lives of all of us, and of our neighbors as well. A safe harbor is a place where people live in peace and not by the sword. Let us preserve the small light that still illuminates our moral compass. We will not return to power those who abandoned us for far too many years. We will free ourselves from the lie of absolute power, from the lie of overwhelming victory.
