Visitors to #JohnWesleysHouse are often intrigued by this large object that looks like a frying pan! It is actually a bed warming pan: In the evening, it was filled with hot coals, then inserted under the bedcovers, and removed again before getting into bed to avoid burnt toes!

This unusual chair in #JohnWesleysHouse dates back to the late 1700s, and was used in winter, when roads in England were often too wet for riding: The user could rise up and down, in a motion similar to riding a trotting horse, to keep muscles toned ready for riding in spring.

It was wonderful to celebrate Christmas with the community around Wesley's Chapel at the City Carols afternoon, with performances from four local schools, lunchtime carol singing and a warm welcome at a candlelit open house in John Wesley's House. Thank you to all who came!

This lantern is thought to have been used by John Wesley in the 1700s. When travelling after dark on unlit roads, a lantern was essential safety equipment. A lantern still lights Wesley's Chapel entrance, shown here at City Carols 2024. Join us 4th December for City Carols 2025!

This portable organ in the Museum dates from the early 1900s. From the late 1800s, organs were used to lead the music in many Methodist churches, while travelling organs like this one could also be used outside for carol singing at Christmas or during evangelistic campaigns.

We've enjoyed having artwork by @TheLeysSchool students in Chapel over summer. The works were inspired by a virtual visit to @WesleysChapel and @JohnWesleysHouse through our learning programme. As the exhibition closes, here are works by Matthias, Sofi, Serafina and Jodie.

This gourd in the Museum shows Rev. Thomas Birch Freeman preaching. In 1835, he was one of the first Methodist missionaries in today's Ghana. The son of an African father and English mother, he started schools and agriculture projects and spoke against slavery. #BlackHistoryMonth

These boots were worn by Rev. Dr. Inderjit Bhogal, a retired Methodist minister with Sikh roots. Inderjit wanted to improve understanding and friendship between those of different faiths, and he wore them on protest marches supporting cultural understanding. #BlackHistoryMonth

Following John Wesley's death in 1791, sales ceramic items featuring his image boomed. These Staffordshire creamware teapots in the collection were made in the late 1700s. Collectively these commemorative items are known as "Wesleyana." Perhaps you have some at home?! #Wesleyana
