when i was in high school we wanted to do a 90s day but they said no because it was too close to present day (15+ years) and the kids that *had* to shop at thrift stores were unironically wearing 90s clothes.

@katrinagulliver @lauren_wilford they outsourced plant care back then too! my mom worked for a company in the early 80s that would take care of the indoor plants in plants in offices and malls. the job requires plant knowledge and access to lots of replacement

I think a lot about all the plants and water features we used to have in offices, lobbies, malls, restaurants. These cost time and money to maintain but businesses used to see it as part of having a nice space.
But eventually the bottom line won out and we don’t see them anymore

It took a long time for business in this country to realize that only price matters to the consumer. If one guy opens a self-service that is always .10 cheaper, all the full service places go out of business very fast. If you build a Walmart, same idea for the downtown stores where some guy waits on you. But they were oddly slow to do this, probably a combination of more protectionist post-war regulations and a certain feeling of custom, of duty to more than just the shareholders.
