List of What to Remove from Your Resume
1, Graduation years or dates on education (helps avoid age bias)
2, Full street address or location details (city & state is enough)
3, Photo/headshot (big no in most US and Remote roles, reduces bias and ATS issues)
4, Age, date of birth, marital status, or any personal details
5, References or “References available upon request” (prepare a separate list if asked)
6, Objective statement (outdated – use a summary instead)
7, High school info (if you have a college degree)
8, Irrelevant or very old jobs (anything over 10-15 years unless directly relevant)
9, Outdated technology or skills (e.g., old software no one uses anymore)
10, Salary history or expectations
11, Hobbies or unrelated personal interests (unless they directly relate to the job)
12, Fancy graphics, tables, columns, or colors that break ATS parsing
13, The word “Resume” at the top
Keep it to 1 page if possible (2 max for senior roles). Focus on results and impact, not just duties. Tailor every resume to the specific job.
