I am a software developer based in Kaduna, Nigeria, working remotely for a small company in Europe. On paper, it sounds like a perfect setup. I earn in foreign currency, I work from home, and I get exposure to global opportunities. But for a long time, the hardest part of the job was not the coding or deadlines. It was getting paid and keeping the value of what I earned. At first, we used traditional payment platforms like PayPal. That was where the trouble started. It always felt like I was losing money at every step. What made it worse was the naira itself. Even after all those deductions, the value kept dropping. Money I earned at the start of the month was worth noticeably less by the end of it. I realized that my problem was not income. It was currency risk. I was earning well, but storing value in naira was like trying to hold water in my hands. Inflation was constant, and devaluation was unpredictable. I found myself rushing to spend or convert money, not because I needed to, but because I was afraid it would lose value if I waited. That was when I started looking seriously into crypto, not as an investment or a quick profit scheme, but as a payment tool. I had heard about stablecoins like USDT and USDC, digital dollars that stay pegged to the US dollar. The idea was simple but powerful. If I could earn in dollars and keep my money in dollars, I could protect myself from local inflation. I spoke to my client and explained the situation. I told them that receiving payments through PayPal was unreliable and expensive, and asked if they would be willing to pay me in stablecoins instead. To my surprise, they were open to it. We agreed on USDT, and I set up a non custodial wallet where I controlled the private keys myself. The first payment felt different. There were no delays, no sudden restrictions, and no hidden fees. The USDT arrived directly in my wallet. More importantly, the value did not change overnight. For the first time in a long while, I did not feel pressure to convert my earnings immediately. Now, I treat my stablecoin balance like a digital savings account. I hold my earnings in USDT as a hedge against naira inflation. When I need to pay for rent, groceries, transport, or other local expenses, I convert only what I need. I use P2P platforms to exchange USDT for naira at real market rates, often much better than what banks or traditional apps offer. This approach gave me control. I decide when to convert, how much to convert, and at what rate. The naira can move up or down, but my earnings remain stable until I choose otherwise. It also made planning easier. I can budget, save, and think long term without constantly worrying about sudden devaluation wiping out my effort. Crypto did not magically solve all my problems. I still work hard, and I still live in Nigeria with its challenges. But it removed a major source of stress. It turned my income into something I could actually rely on. For freelancers like me, working globally but living in an inflation heavy economy, stablecoins are not about speculation. They are about survival, stability, and protecting the value of your time and skills. Now, I use @NOWPayments_io to make things easier for my client. I simply send an invoice link, they open it, and it clearly shows the exact amount I am requesting. All they need to do is connect their wallet and approve the payment. That is it.
