I hope this war is Christ's triumph, Babylon's ruin.

The fundamental difference between the metaphysical outlook of classical Christianity and that of modern ideologies is the same fundamental difference between classical Christianity and the soteriological Gnosticism that defined much of 20th century Protestant theology. It can be boiled down to this question: Is the most fundamental nature of things objectively knowable, good, permanent, reflective of God, and hermeneutically and ethically consequential? The modern ideologies and theologies say No. Classical Christianity says Yes. It is only the way the modern views arrive at that No that differs. Modern ideology denies that there is such a fundamental nature. It is all a construct and can and should be deconstructed and reconstructed. The 20th century theology insists that sin has caused that fundamental nature to be altered. It conflates the nature of God’s design, its law-like structure, and its obligation over all, with the soteriological prospects of the “natural” man now altered by sin.

imagine a year after the covid lockdowns arguing for magistrates to have power to promote and suppress religion

Christian nationalism is a trending topic again. As a pastor who has written a book-length critique of nationalism from a Christian theological perspective, I want to share a few reasons why I find Christian nationalism not only anti-democratic but also anti-Christian. A 🧵:
