BUCHANAN: Dublin Time Machine
Today in 1969, the day before her 22nd birthday, Bernadette Devlin walked into the House of Commons and tore up the rulebook. She had just become the youngest woman ever elected to the Westminster parliament, having won the Mid-Ulster seat five days earlier on a Unity ticket, beating Anna Forrest of the Ulster Unionist Party. The seat had fallen vacant because Anna's husband George had died. Devlin was already a gifted orator and a prominent voice in People's Democracy, the student civil rights organisation that had grown out of Queen's University Belfast, she had been on the streets demanding basic rights for Catholics in Northern Ireland at a time when many in Westminster could barely locate the Bogside on a map. Taking her seat was itself a statement. For Irish nationalists, Westminster was not their parliament. Sinn Féin's abstentionist position, stretching back to the 1918 general election, held that recognising the legitimacy of a British parliament and taking an oath of allegiance to the English Queen was a step too far. Devlin standing in the chamber declared herself to be there in the same tradition as Constance Markievicz, the first woman ever elected to the parliament. Though Markievicz, of course, had refused to take her seat. Devlin broke tradition immediately. Maiden speeches were supposed to be boring, uncontroversial and deferential to the House. Devlin had no interest in any of that. She acknowledged as much from the outset, saying she understood she was flouting the unwritten customs of the chamber, but that the situation of her people made that necessary. Her target was Robin Chichester-Clark, MP for Londonderry (Derry) and brother of the incoming Northern Ireland Prime Minister James Chichester-Clark. He had been in the Bogside, surveying it with what Devlin memorably described as hands clasped behind his back, saying tut-tut every time a policeman had his head scratched. She had been there too, she told the House. Building barricades. What made the speech remarkable was that she refused to pitch it as a sectarian grievance. Catholics and Protestants, she said, were the ordinary people, the oppressed people, the ones she came from and the ones she represented. There was no place in society for them, the ordinary peasants of Northern Ireland. Whether the political corruption in a place like Omagh was green or orange, she said, both were Tory. The ruling minority kept itself in power by keeping everyone else divided and down. She was unsparing on the Unionist Party itself, condemning what she called its deliberate policy of division. Its bigotry, its sectarianism, all deployed as tools to maintain power over a population that deserved better. The New York Times reported that a 21-year-old Irish girl had held the House of Commons spellbound with a maiden speech of quiet eloquence and powerful emotion. One journalist called it the finest maiden speech since Disraeli. The House had been warned. Devlin had more to say, and she would keep saying it.

Israel has killed more journalists than any other nation in history. More than the total number of journalists killed during the U.S. Civil War, WWI, WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War combined.

Al Jazeera’s Heidi Pett says journalist Amal Khalil received threats from an Israeli WhatsApp number during the last war, warning her to stop reporting or leave Lebanon “if she wanted her head to remain on her shoulders,” before being killed today in an Israeli attack.

🇮🇷👀 Iran just dropped a detailed map of the undersea internet cables slicing through the Strait of Hormuz and called them what they are: highly vulnerable. Tasnim News laid it out plain: at least seven major submarine cables run right through that narrow chokepoint. Over 97 percent of global internet traffic for e-commerce, cloud services, banking, and communications passes through them. The report zeroes in on how the southern Gulf states of UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia depend far more heavily on these routes than Iran ever has. Their cloud hubs and data centers sit exposed on the opposite side of the same waters. The Strait isn’t just an oil artery but the digital backbone of the entire region. Damage a few cables — accident or otherwise and you don’t just slow down tankers but digitally black out entire economies in hours. This is the same playbook we’ve already seen in the Red Sea. While Trump keeps wishcasts that Iran is “collapsing” and desperate for cash, Tehran is publishing the map that shows exactly where the next pain point lies. The empire that thought it could dictate terms from afar is learning, once again, that the owners of the Gulf decide who sails, who trades, and now, potentially who stays connected.

🇮🇷🇮🇱🇺🇸 Iran just enforced its red line in the Strait of Hormuz The Commander of the IRGC Navy was blunt: two vessels — the MSC-Francesca (linked to the Israeli regime) and the Epaminodes were intercepted after operating without authorization and tampering with navigation systems, endangering maritime security. Both ships were seized by IRGC forces and escorted straight to Iran’s coast. “Disrupting the order and security of the Strait of Hormuz is our red line.” Iran is showing who is control of the strait, this isn't idle bluster or the porous US blockade which saw 26 Iranian commercial vessels recently slip through. While Trump tweets fantasies about a collapsing Iran and scrambles for more time through Pakistani back channels, Tehran is quietly, calmly, and decisively reminding everyone who actually owns these waters. The same administration boasting about total blockade and total obliteration is now watching its gunboat diplomacy turn into a public humiliation. The owners of the Gulf continue to speak acta non verba. The initiative remains firmly in Iran’s hands and the message couldn’t be clearer.

🇱🇧 A wounded Hezbollah fighter, who had crawled from Bint Jbeil to the Ain Ebel area, was given first aid by Lebanese Civil Defense in Rmeish. They called a Red Cross ambulance to evacuate him north to safety. Israeli forces in nearby Debel got word. They phoned the paramedics and issued a blunt threat: hand him over or we bomb the ambulance. The paramedics refused. Then came one of the most dignified acts of this war. The severely bleeding fighter losing blood fast chose to walk himself to Debel and turn himself in. His only reason: to protect the paramedics and the local residents from Israeli retaliation. This is the same occupation that has bombed churches and smashed statues of Christ with sledgehammers in these very Christian border villages. A Hezbollah fighter who bled for every inch of Lebanon, and in his final act before capture, chose to bleed alone rather than risk innocent lives. The contrast between his selfless act to save lives and Israel couldn't be more stark.

Vladimir Lenin’s 156th birthday, Some of his most important quotations: “Democracy for an insignificant minority, democracy for the rich, that is the democracy of capitalist society.” “A handful of rich states live by robbing the colonies and oppressing the majority of the world’s population.” “Freedom in capitalist society always remains about the same as it was in ancient Greek republics: freedom for slave owners.” “The bourgeoisie of the imperialist ‘Great’ Powers bribe their workers with crumbs from the superprofits they obtain from the colonies.” “Imperialism is not a policy but a stage of capitalism.” “The concentration of production and capital has developed to such a high stage that it has created monopolies which play a decisive role in economic life.” “Finance capital is such a decisive force in all economic and international relations that it is capable of subordinating, and actually does subordinate, even states enjoying the fullest political independence.”

Today is the 156th birthday of Vladimir Lenin, leader of Russia’s Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. He created the Soviet Union, the world’s first socialist state and laid the foundations for consolidating the revolution and transforming the backward and undeveloped ruins of the Russian empire into the superpower Soviet Union: 📚 Literacy: Only 37.9% of men & 12.5% of women could read in 1917. By 1937: 86% of men & 65% of women. The USSR achieved in 22 years what took Britain, France & Germany a century. ⚡ Electrification: Electricity was virtually unknown in Russian villages pre-1917. Output hit 49 billion kWh by 1940, making USSR the world’s 2nd largest generator. 🎓 Education: Free compulsory schooling to age 17 introduced in 1919. Textbooks published in 44 languages by 1927. ✊ Land: Approximately 150 million hectares redistributed from aristocracy & Church to peasants, the largest land redistribution in European history at the time. ♀️ Women: First country to legalise abortion (1920). Women declared legal equals to men in 1917. 67% of Russians have a positive view of the Bolshevik revolutionary who laid the foundations for the Soviet Union to be a superpower.

Theory. Practice. Cadre spent almost two decades [studying, debating, organizing, mobilizing and fighting] to build a revolution. What are we doing? Pushing the contradictions? Showing working class solidarity? Providing mutual assistance? Engaging in propaganda that educates?
