OK ARMY… Part 1: Last Saturday. A grown woman. A calm café. A complete system failure. If you’re still here… congratulations, you’ve basically enrolled in my little romcom against your will. 😭 So Thomas lives like two towns away from me. Before Saturday he texts and goes, very politely: “Do you want somewhere close to you? Somewhere you know? Whatever makes you comfortable.” And I’m like… wow. A man with emotional seatbelts. Respect. Green flag behavior. And also deeply suspicious because my nervous system doesn’t trust emotionally mature men. It’s school holidays, my town is basically a ghost town. Quiet streets. Calm. Like the set of a movie where the budget ran out and everyone went home. Perfect. So I choose this small chill café a bit out of the way, because: 1/ less chance of running into people I know 2/ perfect conditions for me to embarrass myself privately. I send him the address and say I’ll wait outside. And there I am, standing in front of the café like I’m waiting for a court verdict. Talking to myself. Me, whispering: “Be calm. Be normal. Be a woman.” Bestie, via text: “Just be calm. Normal is a premium option.” I look up. And I see him. Thomas, without the uniform. Friends. It is… worse. The uniform was a safety rail. Civilian Thomas is the stairs without the handrail. He’s in this effortlessly outfit: dark jeans, clean fitted top, light jacket, nice watch… the kind of look that says: “I drink water” “I know where my keys are” and “I’ve never Googled ‘how to act on a date’ at 2am.”😬 Meanwhile I’m standing there like a nervous croissant. He sees me and smiles. And my brain immediately becomes a loading wheel and goes: “oh NO.” And then my mouth goes: “Oh merde.” Out loud. He gets closer, still smiling. “Hi.” Me: “H..Hi.” And then… the greeting situation happens. He leans in slightly like we’re doing the French bise. My body panics and throws a handshake at him like I’m meeting a diplomat. “Enchant—”…and then I catch myself mid-word, because we are not in Versailles, I am not greeting a duke…and I’ve already met him. So now we’re stuck in this horrible human loading screen where he’s half-bise, I’m half-handshake, and we both freeze mid-air like two magnets that hate each other. I try to switch to bise. He tries to switch to handshake. So we are both switching at the same time like two Bluetooth devices refusing to pair. I whisper: “Oh no… oh— ok— no—” while my soul attempts to leave through my ears. He laughs. Gently. Warmly. He goes“Should we just… do the bise?” Me, nodding way too hard: “YES. Bise. That’s… the national protocol.” He’s still smiling and I’m still malfunctioning, so we do the bise. And the SECOND my face gets close enough, I smell his perfume. And I swear every thought I’ve ever had just slid off my brain like water off a duck. I just… stand there. Fully paused. Like someone unplugged me. Thomas looks at me like I’m buffering. “Are you okay?” Me: “Huh? Yes. Great. Super. Fantastic.” (Everything I say is a lie.) He glances at the door. “Is this the café?” And I, the smartest woman alive, reply: “Oh yes. Yes. This is it. The café. For coffee. The coffee place.” He smiles. “Should we go in?” Me: “Yes. It’s usually better to drink coffee inside the café.” He laughs again and opens the door for me. I attempt to walk normally but my legs are doing their own choreography. Independent. Freelance. No manager.
