@TWCSec @ChimayBlue @Rothmus if Clinton hadn't cut the military to the bone AND actually took OBL seriously after the first attempt - we might have been able to maintain a sustainable budget - admittedly this is hypothetical - but gwb wouldn't have had unprecedented support for 2 invasions with no 9/11

@ChimayBlue @Rothmus Yep and it was Trump and Republicans who have added to it. In 2020, spending rose 45%. And Republicans oversaw all three of the major events that caused increased spending, 9/11, 2018 Recession, and COVID.

This is the federal income tax play all over again. It started in 1913 as a “class tax” on the rich, hitting less than 1% of the population with a 1% rate above $3,000. It expanded during WWII into a mass tax on most workers through withholding, skyrocketing rates, base broadening, and bracket creep to fund wars and spending. The wealth tax will follow the same trajectory.
Chamath Palihapitiya@chamath

On page twenty-six of “The Billionaire Tax” proposal in California, it explains how the state legislature can convert from a Billionaire Tax to an Everyone Tax without voter approval. They can also adjust the tax to be a yearly tax, not just one time…again, without your approval. Intelligence test for you: if this was meant to just target Billionaires, why did they write this in?

Dear friends: I don’t know any Catholic in the United States, from the most traditional to the most progressive, who does not have strong feelings about the comments from President Trump and Vice President Vance about Pope Leo XIV. These include not only President Trump’s initial disrespectful Truth Social post about the Holy Father, but also Vice President Vance’s similarly disrespectful comments about Pope Leo having to be “careful” when he speaks about theology. Let me share some of my own feelings. First of all, it is shocking that a President and Vice President would treat such a good, holy and learned man with such disdain. Imagine telling a man with the Holy Father’s learning and experience (and authority) that he doesn’t understand theology sufficiently. What’s more, imagine attacking him as, ridiculously, “weak on crime” or somehow not understanding foreign policy. Second, I’m edified by Pope Leo’s charitable and courageous response to all this. Charitable because he has not responded in any way other than with charity and respect. As some of you may know, I know the Holy Father slightly, thanks to our being seated together at the Synod for two weeks, and know him to be a kind, reserved, discerning and highly intelligent person. In a word, holy. But courageous too: as we have seen during his time in Algeria and Cameroon, Pope Leo has not shied away from continuing to preach the Gospel, and speaking out in favor of peace (and yes, he understands St. Augustine’s concept of the “just war”) and against, as he said today, tyrants and those who would use God’s name to support violence of bloodshed. So, where will this all end? It’s hard to say. But I would imagine that now that the taboo has been broken, politicians will continue to denigrate him and thus try to persuade people, without saying it explicitly, to think that the Pope’s words do not need to be listened to. But this will be in vain for two reasons. First, Pope Leo is clearly fearless. A few hours after he was elected as pope, I spoke with a fellow Augustinian priest who had known “Bob” for decades. “He’s a great listener, very kind and much loved.” Then he paused. “But he’s no pushover.” But the main reason that the Pope’s words will be heard is less about Robert Prevost’s own many virtues but something else: the Vicar of Christ will be heard because he is preaching the Gospel. As Jesus told his disciples, “Heaven and earth may pass away, but my words will never pass away.” So, in these strange times, fear not.

@TheBaconFather @Oilfield_Rando AT&T seems to have become better in the last year, or there is a note in my file. They now know to go directly to the pole to start troubleshooting, instead of bothering me to restart my equipment and check my connections yet again.

@Oilfield_Rando The fuck? I had AT&T come out and move my service last month and didn't have any issues. And it was an AT&T employee with an AT&T van. He even gave me some extra fiber for my homelab so I can move my drop as I reorganize and rebuild everything.

Me: “I need to schedule a tech to move the fiber optic cable to another room, old room is becoming a nursery” ISP’s foreign customer service: “We can’t do that saar, you’ll have to schedule a local contractor to do that” Me: “It’s YOUR cable, and YOUR equipment, I am not hiring a third party contractor for that. Charge me for the tech visit if you need to.” ISP: “Sorry Saar we just cannot do that” Me: “Alrighty, then you need to schedule a tech to come remove your service entirely. Elevate this to your supervisor.” ISP: “Saar I am pleasure to inform you that we are to provide this service saar but tech visit will cost $150” Me: “That is fine.” Tech who moved the cable: “Yeah we have terrible customer service, f**k those guys, I’m not charging you for this visit, I decide that.” Everything is a struggle with the outsourced, everything is gravy with domestics.

@rascal007x @austeni Your analogy is false. 1) homicide at a national level would be genocide-not the intent 2) self-defense is always pre-emptive homicide. it's a matter of time proximity - when gun is pointed at you, or after someone threatens to shoot you while searching for their gun.

@__MIKEYMAC__ At this point they are just pro athletes and should be under contract with buyouts, 4 year bonuses, insurance, clawbacks etc. NCAA could create standard contract terms, where just the numbers get filled in, so that players completely understand what they are signing up for.

The NCAA has to fix the portal issue. Either limit the number of times a player can portal or figure out a way to compensate the school that did all the work in developing the player. You want to know why no mid-majors made runs in this year's tourney? They're just farm clubs.

The conduct they are claiming is detrimental is Christianity. They fired Jaden Ivey for being Christian. Worth noting the Bulls didn’t fire Ronnie Brewer after he was arrested for DUI. Or Joakim Noah after he was arrested for possession of drugs. When Jameson Curry was arrested for public urination and then resisted arrest, the Bulls suspended him for one game, but also refused to fire him for his conduct. Christianity is apparently where the Chicago Bulls draw the line.

@TolaimShelEldad @avidseries @chrislhayes I'm not a big fan of fining employers - unless you mean complicit ones. If they check out with e-verify and the employer didn't provide a stolen identity that isn't on the employer.

I worked as an aide 14 yrs in public school. One afternoon in 5th grade a kid asked the teacher, What's Prussia? The teacher answered, what we called Russia a long time ago. Oh no no no, I stood up from my chair in the corner. Nope. Not today, lady with apples on her pockets.

@oparaERI @DeadlineDayLive Obviously annoying, but instead of invalidating no 3 & 4, there should be more rules in favor of the players for fairness. For instance, refs should be mandated to go to the on-pitch monitor for game changing decisions as long as captains protest, irrespective of VAR's verdict.

🇩🇪 German referee Patrick Ittrich has proposed a number of potential rule changes in football: 1️⃣ For a tactical foul in midfield, award a free-kick 17 metres from goal. How many of those fouls would we see after that? 2️⃣ If a player rolls around three times and calls for a doctor, bring one on — then make him wait on the touchline for three minutes. How fast do you think he’d get back up? 3️⃣ If a player verbally abuses the referee, send him off for 10 minutes to cool down. Go for a quick cycle to stay warm before returning. There’s something to learn from handball there. 4️⃣ Why is a referee being surrounded by 10 players after a decision? For me, bang, bang, bang — three red cards. Play seven vs ten. That would sort it out. Do you agree with his changes? 🤔
