A whole view of life is captured in the Old English word dūstsċēawung, which meant ‘dust-watching’ or ‘contemplation of dust’. People would watch motes of dust float in the sunlight, and think about how the dust used to be other things. A book, a tree, the walls of a city—a people, when it ceases to love itself—all will fade like the shouts of children on a summer day, or vanish like the memory of a dream. (IPA: [ˈduːstˌʃæɑ̯.wʊŋɡ])

Allow me to rock your world. America has about 6000 hospitals. 5121 of those are publicly accessible and 1224 are completely free. That's twice as many charity hospitals as Canada has Tim Horton's. Literally. Then, when you see a doctor, the doctor speaks English and went to school somewhere you've heard of. Harvard is not the only way to get educated, but it is nice in the fall. We don't push people into medically assisted suicide for cost reasons. We don't ask people with emergency conditions to sit in the ER for 10 hours before they see a doctor. So yes, if you have a cutting-edge disease and you go to a private hospital and get the best care in the world, you're on the hook for it. But note that you are also ALIVE.

People say Canadian healthcare is not free, because we pay taxes for it. But in America, people pay taxes and still have to pay for healthcare out of their pockets. And if they are broke, the hospital tells them to go die.

If your name includes a dental fricative - e.g. Anthony, Theodore, Nathaniel, Samantha, Elizabeth, Catherine, etc. - native speakers of the overwhelming majority of the world's languages cannot pronounce your name properly. If you're living or traveling outside of the Anglosphere you learn to adapt to this, accepting whatever the most common local mispronunciation happens to be, because the alternative of lecturing every single person you encounter on the finer points of English phonetics is actually insane.

Say my name right! If you can say Tina, you can say Ming-Na. And Wen is my last name. Happy AAPI Heritage month!

Overheard at the park: "Mom, there's a goose. Can I follow him?" The children yearn for wild goose chases.

I think it depends on the diocese, I was told by the previous secretary that the Big Blue Book of Rules says "yes, we have to go to a different priest" but I myself have never opened the book she was talking about to check because I preferred to go elsewhere anyway. She is no longer the secretary and the new one does not know where this hypothetical book is so I have no way to check now.

If you work at your parish (not volunteer, actually on the payroll), do you have to go to a different parish for confession?

@sadgirlyboss I would respond with "terms accepted, take this a proposal to marry just like our great great grandparents who had little concept of dating. I will ask again in two months if the answer is no."

“you are the kind of girl i’d marry, but not the kind of girl i’d date” is an insane thing to say to a person

Little kids are hilarious. I’m playing Go Fish and on the first round decided to answer politely when asked for cards. Now, every round, there is a 5yo and a 7yo declaring w/ utter solemnity “indeed I do” and “sadly, no—GO FISH!”

I'm not someone who thinks that any being who has been regarded as a god is automatically a demon; even St. John the Apostle worshipped an angel by mistake in Revelation 19:10, presumably because he thought it was God. That said, some of y'all's guys are definitely demons.

“Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” tried to warn America of the dangers of Hindu’s Kali worship, but the Republicans wouldn't listen.

Stoicism is the philosophy of slaves (Epictetus), unjustly condemned men awaiting death (Seneca), and emperors of a dying empire (Marcus Aurelius). It became the philosophy of people who couldn’t control events, but still needed to feel sovereign over a dwindling sphere.
Roman Helmet Guy@romanhelmetguy

Stoicism is popular because apathy is the sickness of our age and stoicism glorifies it. Stoicism is cope for living in a dying society. Stoicism is managed decline. You need to become anti-stoic. You need to become so passionate it’s self-destructive.
