In the early hours of January 3, 2026, a deliberate sabotage attack on critical electricity infrastructure near the Lichterfelde power station in southwest Berlin triggered a widespread brownout and partial blackout affecting tens of thousands of residents and businesses. A fire was set at a cable bridge over the Teltow Canal, severely damaging several high-voltage and medium-voltage power lines that supplied electricity and district heating to the area.
Authorities quickly treated the incident as sabotage. A left-wing extremist group calling itself the “Vulkangruppe” (Volcano Group) claimed responsibility in an extensive online manifesto, stating the attack was aimed at fossil fuel infrastructure and the perceived abuses of modern industrial society.
However, people analyzing the manifesto found peculiar wording, grammar errors and spelling errors indicating that the original text was not German, but originated in Russian.
Russia frequently uses disposable agents, tasked to destroy and disrupt critical infrastructure in countries which Moscow considers enemy states.
