What's the most difficult novel you've ever read that was actually worth the effort?

@davemcclure @gmiller Why was "Guns, Germs & Steel "difficult?" Possibly eye opening or controversial, but not really difficult.

@DeveloperFish @gmiller first few chapters were rather long for me, but indeed it became hard to put down the more i read… one of my favorite books of all time.
