John Chapter 4
Verse 5
So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
Study guide.
Note on Samaria, when the Babylonians conquered the southern kingdom of Judah, they took much of the population captive, exiling them to the Babylonian Empire. All they left behind were the lowest classes of society, that the Babylonians thought they couldn't use. These ones left behind intermarried with other non-Jewish peoples who slowly came into the region, and the Samaritans emerged as an ethnic and religious group. In the next few verses we see Jesus also had compassion on these people.
