Our study shows how analysing toys using the method of cognigrammetry can tell us about the cognitive capacity of children.

By analysing the bow-and-arrow play set we have been able to reconstruct a setting of situated learning through developing peripheral participation across different-age learners and teachers.

We have identified different learning processes and aims as well as changing roles within a community of practice of Wodaabe bowyers.

Lastly, we argue that how important play is for innovation, pointing out how the initial emergence of play objects correlates with periods of innovation.
