It marks spring's arrival, rabi harvest, and new beginnings for Marathi & Konkani Hindus in Maharashtra/Goa.
A "Gudi" (bright silk flag on bamboo pole, topped with neem/mango leaves & garlands) is raised outside homes symbolizing victory & prosperity.
Legends: Rama's return to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana; Brahma creating the universe; Shalivahan's win over Huns starting the Shaka calendar.
