NEWS: Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced today that the company is working on a new chip/computer for orbital data-centers called Nvidia Vera Rubin Space-1. "It's going to start data-centers out in space. Of course, in space there's no conduction, no convection, there's just radiation, so we have to figure out how to cool these systems out in space, but we got lots of great engineers working on it."

@SawyerMerritt I hope @elonmusk @SpaceX take example from Nvidia and charge 10x the cost for Nvidia to send those chips into orbit and also send their own chips to compete against them for 0.1 of the cost. SpaceX to 🚀

Orbital data centers powered by Vera Rubin Space-1. Real-time AI on satellites, processing Earth data without delay. This isn't hype—it's happening. Jensen just announced the next space race... and NVIDIA's winning it. ⭐ $NVDA moonshot! 🌌💻 $NVDA to infinity! 🚀 #NVIDIASpace #NVIDIA #NVDA

@SawyerMerritt Taking AI compute to orbital space raises governance questions no existing international framework is equipped to handle. That conversation is overdue.

There will come a divergence of Jensen and Elon. If it's not apparent already. Tesla and SpaceX will become less and less dependent on Nvidia chips. Until then Nvidia will cherish their biggest buyer. The competition between Nvidia and Tesla is contrived. It's not really there. A mirage.

@SawyerMerritt This is next-level innovation! 🌌💻 Launching data centers into orbit opens incredible possibilities—but also huge engineering challenges, especially cooling in the vacuum of space. Excited to see how the team at Nvidia tackles this with Vera Rubin Space-1.

@SawyerMerritt They already know how, its a matter of scaling. Or take the Starlink route and don't concentrate compute.

@SawyerMerritt Data centers in space. No conduction. No convection. Just radiation cooling. Jensen isn't building for today's AI. He's building for the AI that doesn't exist yet. The infrastructure always comes before the revolution it enables. This is what betting on the future looks like.

@SawyerMerritt If they are going to be in space, would it not be possible to allow said data centers to simply cool themselves via passive controlled space flow, or am I completely misinterpreting the physics?

@SawyerMerritt Space is cold. The whole point of space data centers is that cooling will be much simpler and cheaper

@SawyerMerritt @RGVaerialphotos Liquid cooling would still work fine. Radiators on the back side of the solar array I assume would also be fine.

@SawyerMerritt The interesting signal here is that AI infrastructure is starting to push into entirely new physical environments. If compute demand keeps compounding, the constraint stops being chips and starts being power, cooling, and real estate.

the race to put compute in orbit is becoming a real theme. Musk has been pushing for space-based infrastructure through Starlink and SpaceX, Bezos has Blue Origin working on similar ambitions, and now Nvidia is designing chips specifically for orbital data centers. the cooling problem Jensen mentioned is genuinely unsolved at scale. no conduction, no convection, only radiation, that's a fundamental engineering constraint that doesn't have an obvious solution yet. the fact that Nvidia is already working on it suggests they see this as a near-term market, or maybe it's just hype

@SawyerMerritt Really wondering how this works logistically when you have a data center in space. Upgrade and improvement happen by rockets, so you'd have to square the success rate of a launch vs. a drive to get your hardware to where it needs to be.

@SawyerMerritt no atmospheric drag, no convection cooling, unlimited solar power — it's genuinely an ideal environment for certain compute workloads. the thermal radiation constraint is the hard part, but Nvidia betting on space-native chip design is the right long-term call.

NVL72 ground-side stuff, ties to space/power limits) Rubin Space-1 orbital modules tho... 25x H100 inference in space? That's the craziest part for me. My main Rubin blog was all ground-side NVL72 — ConnectX-9 fixing MoE traffic hell, BlueField-4 offloads, NVLink 6 magic. Wrote it a month early and it still slaps post-GTC. But space power limits? Those efficiency tricks I covered feel 10x more important up there. Mind blown. What hit you hardest from keynote? 👇 yuvanesh.vercel.app/blogs/Rubin

@SawyerMerritt Space data centers solve the single biggest constraint in AI infrastructure: cooling. Zero convection means you can push chip density way beyond terrestrial limits. Jensen isn't building satellites, he's building the next tier of compute.

@SawyerMerritt Jensen just dropped the Vera Rubin Space-1: Nvidia’s first chip designed specifically for the vacuum. If you aren't architecting for Off-Planet Intelligence, you're just paying a Gravity Tax. In 2026, the edge isn't your phone; it’s 500 miles up.
