It's always funny watching self-prescribed "autists" pretend that their social inflexibility is some kind of integrity superpower instead of being the literal disability that it's rightfully diagnosed as. You're not principled, you're either literally disabled or just arrogant. Doublespeak, inflection, innuendo, implication, metaphor, performative assertion, face saving, euphemism, and everything else outside of the purview of exact literal statements are crucial to the human condition. Do you actually think you're better than centuries, millennia of sociological evolution? Please. You are the walking Chesterton's Fence eradicating arrogant swill who was contorted into the pretension of a label applied to the rape victims of an all cell phone society associating themselves with shit-in-my-pants screaming nonverbal chimpanzees who actually have a born neurological disorder. You are a pest. A sweltering pudgy sponge of facial sweat and vacuous staring, a pasty tyrant demanding the world turn into a simpleton's daycare of clean clarity statements. When you can finally choose from the entire world what kind of social group you want and what kind of culture you want to consume, the disease can finally be justified into a superiority. Even if the entire Western world decided to be more blunt and remove a few of its politesse elements for the sake of brutal honesty like the Chinese do (a famously honest and fair dealing culture), how are you going to contend with the Prisoner's Dilemma of dishonesty? If you want the world to be more honest, how are you going to enforce it? Punish dishonesty? Okay, how are you going to detect it? Wow I guess you really have to pay close attention to their tone, body language, eye contact, facial expressions, and context. And when you find a liar, what happens if other people believe them more than you? That could be really difficult to deal with, if you just accuse them of lying they could just lie more and the people who believe them could harm you instead of them. I guess you'd have to sort of withhold the accusation until you find evidence of them lying. But maybe you could sort of... say things a certain way to make other people like you more so it's easier to get them to stop liking the liar.... Gosh, this all sounds so exhausting. It's like learning how to talk in a whole new language! There should be like... a system that teaches kids how to navigate these problems. It'd be really helpful if like... they didn't even know they were learning it, they just pick it up naturally like their first language. And eventually you reinvent the status quo through first principles. That is the world you live in right now, a world of secret conversations occurring in tandem with verbal ones. A world where the ability to convey social status, hierarchy, taboo, judgement, and correction through a tone rather than a word is the difference between you alone and you amongst your tribe. The barrier from a knife in your throat or a life in a box under a bridge because you are fundamentally unemployable. The literal fucking gateway to your ability to find love and reproduce. Solitude may not seem like a death sentence to the autist in the same way that emaciation is no hurdle to the starved. It's important to remember our origins, a world where a man without his tribe is doomed to die slowly, painfully, excruciatingly in the wilderness. It's important to remember that your ability to communicate and make connections is the single most important skill you could ever have for success in life and that the highest positions of power and historical glory are reserved for the men who could do these things best. You're not special, cool, or superior for discarding one of the most fundamental skills a human being requires to survive and thrive in the world. You are a singular rodent surrounded and outnumbered, and your only allies are all equally as bereft, inconsiderate, and incapable of unity as you. You do not have any better insight on human behavior or social mores than anyone on this earth. You are fundamentally inferior to a 5 year old child who has learned to say please and thank you. You are not above discretion, manners, or small talk. Small talk is one of the most crucial lubricants we have to keep us from killing each other. It is the final stand against the crushing weight of life's problems. A small sweet reminder that you have the capacity to connect to your fellow man in a way that doesn't force you to summon precious energy from a mind occupied by greater burdens. You are not clever for sabotaging the potential for social connections in favor of fulfilling your own personal compulsions. You are not moral for clinging to truth as a justification for your ineptitude, your misguided bluntness causes more harm onto the world around you than any white lie ever could. You are "not reading the room just fine", you are a fucking blind person demanding the sun disappear because you literally can't see the point of it existing. To the autist genuinely concerned with not being this type of person and genuinely wanting to "learn" the secret language that everyone else seems to understand: Every case is different, some of you aren't even really autistic just socially stunted and there are resources you can find to help you fake it until you make. Others of you may genuinely be incapable of parsing certain signals and that's fine, just don't develop a superiority complex. Socializing is the single most important skill one can have, cooperation is the force multiplier that quickly eradicates any singular power. Your ability to influence the thoughts and actions of others is the defining line between civilized man and feralized animal. The innocuous and confusing rituals of communication and behavior we have are all shit tests developed to sharpen and maintain your ability to navigate through a social world.
