Successive governments convinced themselves that an 'unstoppable green energy transition' meant access to fossil fuels was neither necessary nor desirable. That was always a fantasy, and now we're paying the price. Fossil fuels are still responsible for 90% of our energy needs. The Bondi massacre was a wake up call on social cohesion. How Is An Iranian Spy Recruitment Ring Is Operating Openly in London!? Tehran is exploiting Britain’s “permissive environment” as a base for its Western intelligence-gathering and propaganda campaigns. The regime is being accused of using Press TV, the English-language channel of Iran’s state broadcaster, which has a studio in London, as a front to recruit assets. The channel is said to have effectively created a “target list for terrorists” with its reports on Jewish charities, schools and community organisations. Last week, two men were arrested after an anti-Semitic firebomb attack in north London, in which four ambulances owned by a Jewish charity were set alight outside a synagogue. Counter-terrorism police are leading an investigation into the arson, amid fears it may have been orchestrated by Iran. There have long been warnings about the threat posed by Iranian agents in Britain. Tehran’s intelligence services have repeatedly targeted Jewish people, Israelis and Iranian dissidents, frequently using criminal proxies. “From an Iranian perspective, London is a permissive environment,” says Jonathan Hackett, a former American intelligence operator and expert in Iran’s covert operations. “Press TV not only has done clandestine work using these credentials but they also openly do things.” Mr Hackett said that some Press TV journalists were used by the regime to spot and assess potential targets for recruitment, adding that using journalistic credentials as a cover for espionage was not unique to Iran. Press TV’s London office now plays a “more significant” role in Tehran’s spy recruitment, given that the broadcaster was sanctioned elsewhere in the West, Mr Hackett added. In recent years, Iran’s English-language broadcaster has been sanctioned by the EU, Australia, Canada and the US, all of which cited the forced confessions that Press TV airs of detainees, including journalists and activists. Press TV had its licence to broadcast in Britain revoked by Ofcom in 2012. It has also been banned from YouTube. However, it continues to use social media sitesincluding Instagram, Facebook and X to promote its shows, and has more than one million followers across those channels. Today was one of the most horrifying days of my life as an academic. Walking through Iran University of Science and Technology, a top-ranked public university in Iran, I was struck by the devastation. Only last month, this campus was alive with students, bustling between classrooms. Now, parts of the campus lie in ruins, classrooms shattered, hallways choked with dust and shattered glass. I saw the offices of professors burned. A newly renovated building, where students gathered for programs, for socializing, for life, destructed. One student, tearfully, told me: “My professor’s office was still burning a little. That’s where I used to wait for office hours. To ask questions. To appeal my grade.” This is the same university that launched Iran’s Omid and Zafar 2 satellites, symbols of homegrown technological achievement. A week ago, one of its professors was assassinated. Yesterday, they bombed it. From sanctions to targeted killings, to the bombing of research centers and universities, there’s a clear pattern: de-development & de-industrialisation/ the systematic dismantling of a nation’s indigenous development, its industrial base, its capacity to stand on its own. We will never forget that as the American and Zionist war criminals blatantly target universities, schools, hospitals/ assassinating professors and killing children, and after 2 years or genocice, western intellectuals are still debating whether or not to pass a symbolic, non-enforceable BDS resolution.
