Said it before. Saying it again: the biggest mistake the US made is assuming schools and teachers needed only to be properly incentivized (or threatened). Changing practice, not policy, is where our focus should be.

This is the single most important difference between schools in the US & schools in England right now. A head teacher said to me: it's hard to find a newly qualified teacher these days who doesn't know about working memory, retrieval practice etc. what a sea change. and one that has absolutely not happened here in any way shape or form. the differences in knowledge of basic cogsci are STARK.
