@FredFredSanders Owen was the main figure behind it. Scuppered largely thanks to Baxter's opposition in the Parliamentary committee which meant it never had time to be passed as the national confession for the Cromwellian Protectorate.

This 1654 draft of a confession (Beeke & Jones, p. 311) reads like Piper wrote point 14 and a perfectionist wrote point 15. But apparently it's Goodwin, Owen, Manton, Cheynell? Has this been subjected to discoursification?

@RedemTheTimes To be fair we find this same concern over the boundaries of authority all over the place in the post-Ref era. E.g. general panic among Presbyterians during the explosion of print in the 1640s - 'every Tom, Dick, and Harry thinks they're a theologian!'

What Davenant did with the Synopsis Purioris Theologiae was really good. Taking a book which had already received an edition in a scholarly press, furthering historical and Christian scholarship, and then re-orienting it for a churchly-market.

Advance online publication is a really valuable system, and for early career researchers especially. But it is gratifying to see the full print version assigned. Check it out if you've missed Owen's penchant for political machinations! Link below.
