nobody will be confused if you say voiture instead of char, faire du shopping instead of magaziner, or épicerie instead of dépanneur. there's a myth that québecers are hostile with people whose french is imperfect but my experience is the opposite - they are very encouraging!

Everything about official bilingualism in Canada is built on myth. People can’t “just learn” a language they don’t need. Canada isn’t “built on” two equally-sized language groups. Bilingualism isn’t “necessary” to function at an elite level. It’s all just Laurentian folklore.
