History beyond the mainstream. Not lost-just ignored.

The Yazidis are one of the oldest religious minorities in the Middle East, with roots in the Kurdish mountain regions of ancient Mesopotamia. Their faith blends elements of ancient Iranian religion, Christianity, and Islam with unique rituals, and their holiest site is Lalish in northern Iraq. For centuries, Yazidis have faced persecution, but the most devastating tragedy occurred in August 2014, when ISIS attacked their community in Sinjar. Thousands were killed, and at least 6,000 Yazidis, mostly women and children, were kidnapped and subjected to slavery and abuse. Despite these horrors, Yazidis continue to show resilience, preserving their culture and seeking justice for the crimes perpetrated against them. Image credit: UNICEF
