@chaykak i hope liberal arts enjoyers can see at least a glimmer of hope they can reclaim their prestige in the coming world. "tech bro talk annoying" is true but the humanities are also well-positioned for a comeback and that's great news for everyone

alt lit is doing language poetry from 40 years ago and thinking you stumbled onto some new way of thinking about poetry. Read a book!

Sitting in a diner today, reading about Paul writing Yesterday, I thought, I’ll sit here a little longer, and read, until it comes on the radio And I have And it has

I think the adoption of AI is going to result in a different kind of writing being valued from human writers, probably less chronologies and reference points and more personal narratives and impassioned rhetoric

Every year I think the same thing: the greatest moment in Oscar history will be when they announce a winner WHO WASN’T EVEN NOMINATED

@CitizenBego I won’t belabor either, except to suggest that all those important capacities of yours were engaged by the story, which obviously was invented by Maggie O’Farrell but was delivered very effectively, in my view at least, by the screenplay she co-wrote with Chloe Zhao. YRMV!

@CalMorgan Having a child? Loving Shakespeare? Having a lively imagination? Being v empathetic? Power of image? Etc. I don't want to belabour my point. But it felt pedestrian to me, undercooked, but also well-made, and often well-acted.

Hamnet is basically in a genre all its own: deathbedcore, or convalescence fiction. Can't believe somebody let them write a script this bare and hollow.

@CitizenBego I can’t speak for your reaction, but it’s hard to understand how a film could make one weep five times without the script being at least somewhat responsible.

@CalMorgan I mean if you think just the subject matter of child death is script, cool. I was weepy five times in there. But it had nothing to do with power of the script.

Literally all of the awards attention HAMNET has gotten should’ve gone to THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE, a big weird ambitious film that actually has something to say

Oh yeah. 'Lorentzen’s essay bristles with thought-provoking observations but will strike many readers as idealist and regressive in its ultimate conception of literature.' wsws.org/en/articles/20…
