When will the swan begin to sing? We’re so weary of everything And the swan on the river goes glidin' by The swan on the river goes glidin' by —Bob Dylan, “The Ballad of the Gliding Swan”

Mayor @ZohranKMamdani: It is time we stop asking our libraries to justify their existence. Earlier this week, we released our executive budget. Our budget baselines $31.7M in new, permanent funding across all 3 of New York's public library systems.

@CalMorgan @davewingrave I like the set-up but Kitamura does this kind of fiction better. See: Audition or (better) Intimacies. John of John is the only great English language novel in 2026 so far, but there’s a bonanza ahead, i.e. Whitehead, Diaz, James, St. John Mandel, Cusk. The new Yoon is terrific.

@HamiltonCain @davewingrave But that’s so blunt! It may be a little minor and imperfect, but surely it has its moving qualities? Then again I am not a critic, I’m an advocate, and I tend to be defensive of writers, even those I have nothing to do with. (Though in this case I have at least read the book.)

Curious: Do people generally believe that at some future date all social media posts will be reviewed for copyright violation, and the only people to go unscathed will be those who add a few words at the bottom of their post saying “I do not own this material”?

@olgatuleninova As I’ve mentioned before, Edward Hopper did create a painting called “The Dory,” but it was a painting of a . . . dory.

Feisty is proud to be a Democrat!
If you haven't heard Justin Pearson's speech to the TN State House today you need to listen. "Today, you will take the only Black-majority district from us. But I want you to know: No matter what you do, no matter how much you try to break us & make us bend & quit, we will still be here." Good people who understand the Constitution and care are sick of our racist president and his hateful minions. We stand with Justin Pearson today and every single day. #EqualityForAll #DemsUnited

@RoganBarbara I haven’t read it! That’s part of my point. Neither have those tarring it as “gimmicky,” which seems anti-art. And a final point before I shut up: the only thing any of us learns by reading a book is what *our* experience of it is. It may not be for everyone, and that’s fine!

@CalMorgan It may seem gimmicky. The question is whether the form suits the story and contributes in some essential way, and the only way to know that is to read it. I gather you liked it a lot?

Daniel Kraus won the fiction Pulitzer for ‘Angel Down,’ a World War I narrative told in a single sentence. I can't knock what I haven't yet read, but really: Why one sentence? Punctuation's free. I'm guessing the author rode a unicycle as a kid. #BookLovers

@RoganBarbara Barbara, I respect where you’re coming from—but I see so much pre-emptive anger directed at this book simply because it happens to involve a formal experiment. I’d like to understand better where it comes from. Do we want writers to be *less* adventurous? Is that good for anyone?

@CalMorgan Been a writer all my working life and a literary agent for much of it, so I don't really need to be told to trust artists. Of course real ones push the boundaries. I hope this writer isn't a one-sentence pony, but I'll read and judge for myself.

@RoganBarbara I don’t have to admit that! It’s just a slightly unusual formal move. Artists are supposed to challenge the power of their tools. That’s like saying Monet’s paintings look blurry. Don’t distrust artists! They’re not trying to put one over on you.

@CalMorgan I do. I plan to read the book. And I'm very fond of semicolons. From the outside, though, you have to admit it looks like an affectation.
