Chris Olave Reportedly has a blood clot in his lungs, also known as a pulmonary embolus. Usually people with PE’s present with acute shortness of breath and pain in the chest. More often than not these start in the calf (DVT) and travel up to the lungs (see diagram). Thankfully these are often small, although large ones can cause a saddle embolus, usually leading to immediate demise. Athletes are often at increased risk for developing blood clots, but I feel there’s been a significant increase over the past 5 years or so (similar to rise in Achilles tears). Conspiracy theories aside, both COVID itself and the vaccine likely have played a role in this. Excluding it would be naive. Usually players will be put on IV blood thinners initially, then transitioned to either oral or injectable. Often the time frame is 3-6 months depending on specifics. Another thing that can help to both prevent and treat blood clots is Nattokinase and Lumbrokinase, natural supplements that can break down clots and even prevent them from occurring in the first place. Scary situation for Olave, but the good news is that he listened to his body, got treated and should be good to return to full contact in 3 months. Players can’t sustain hits while on blood thinners due to bleeding risk.
