@ChristineMap Hello Christine. I’ve just checked with the two suppliers we use, and neither stock it, so I’m sorry but I have nowhere to order it from. The publisher (Pink Press) is based in Australia so that is probably why we can’t get hold of it. Apologies!

Because of the ongoing war in be Gulf, the aeroplane designed to survive the unthinkable is being watched closely by many. When people talk about the “Doomsday Plane,” they usually imagine something mythical a secret aircraft waiting for the end of the world. The reality is both more sober and more fascinating. The aircraft in question is the E-4B National Airborne Operations Center, a heavily modified Boeing 747-200 built to function as a flying command post should the United States ever lose its ground-based leadership infrastructure. In the most extreme scenario, nuclear war, it would allow national command authorities to continue directing military forces from the air. In other words, it’s not a weapon. It’s a continuity plan. Inside, the aircraft is less airline cabin and more airborne bunker: hardened against electromagnetic pulse, filled with secure communications equipment, briefing rooms, and enough systems redundancy to operate independently for long periods. It carries battle staff, communications specialists, and aircrew trained for a mission nobody ever hopes to perform. One feature always captures people’s imagination. Trailing from the rear of the aircraft is a five-mile-long antenna… literally reeled out behind the aircraft in flight. This is part of a Very Low Frequency (VLF) communications system used to transmit signals to submerged ballistic missile submarines, the most survivable leg of the nuclear deterrent. VLF radio waves can penetrate seawater, allowing commanders to communicate with submarines even when they are hidden deep below the ocean’s surface. It’s a remarkable piece of engineering and a reminder that the 747 platform was never just a passenger aeroplane. The same aircraft that democratised long-haul travel also became a flying laboratory, a space shuttle carrier, a cargo giant, and, in this case, a last-resort command centre. In my book JUMBO, I explore how versatile the Queen of the Skies truly became. During interviews with crew members who have worked around these aircraft, one theme came through repeatedly: professionalism mixed with quiet humility. The mission is serious, but the people involved understand their real purpose is deterrence, ensuring the aircraft never has to do the job it was built for. And that’s perhaps the most important point. When tensions rise and rumours swirl online about “doomsday planes taking off,” it’s easy to imagine the worst. In truth, these aircraft exist precisely to prevent catastrophe, by ensuring that even in the most extreme circumstances, order and communication would endure. The Boeing 747 was built to connect the world. In one of its most extraordinary adaptations, it was also built to protect it. JUMBO, out now, tells the deeper story of how one aircraft evolved into many different roles across five decades of aviation history. From carrying holidaymakers across oceans…to quietly preparing for the day we hope never comes. 📷 (c) Boeing Images #Boeing747 #JUMBOBook #AviationHistory #AvGeek #DoomsdayPlane #E4B #QueenOfTheSkies #AviationTechnology #Airpower #Iran
