UAE-Backed Rapid Support Militia Sold Children in Khartoum as Violations Reach 62% in Darfur, Child Welfare Official Tells Al Jazeera In statements to Al Jazeera, Abdelkader Abdullah, Secretary-General of Sudan’s National Council for Child Welfare, detailed the scale of violations committed against children during the war, placing the UAE-backed Rapid Support Militia (Janjaweed) at the center of these abuses. Abdullah confirmed that the UAE-backed Rapid Support Militia (Janjaweed) sold children and used them in human trafficking operations during its control of parts of Khartoum. He identified the central market area as a key location where these activities took place while the militia maintained control over the area. Expanding on the broader picture, Abdullah stated that the Darfur region has witnessed extremely high levels of violations against children. He estimated that out of approximately three million children in the region, at least 62 percent have been subjected to serious abuses, reflecting the depth and scale of the crisis. He added that South Kordofan and North Kordofan also recorded significant levels of violations, with rates not falling below 20 percent. In Al Jazirah State, the percentage ranges between 45 and 55 percent, indicating that the impact extends well beyond a single region. In Khartoum State, particularly in Bahri and central Khartoum, Abdullah described the situation as extremely severe. He emphasized that the practice of selling children and subjecting them to trafficking was among the most serious violations documented during the period when the UAE-backed Rapid Support Militia (Janjaweed) controlled key areas of the capital. He stressed that these actions have had devastating consequences on children, describing them as fundamentally incompatible with basic human values, religious principles, and reason. Abdullah also highlighted ongoing efforts by the National Council for Child Welfare to respond to the crisis. He noted that the council is working intensively on mental health and psychosocial support programs in coordination with partners, as children continue to suffer from both direct violations and the broader impact of the war, including disease and displacement. He concluded by stating that, under the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Welfare, efforts will be intensified in 2026 to strengthen child protection mechanisms, in line with national policy directions and the council’s role as both a coordinating body and an advocate for children. These facts point to a pattern of crimes that cannot be dismissed as isolated violations, but rather as systematic acts targeting children at the core of their humanity, from their sale to their exploitation in human trafficking. Such practices rise to the level of terrorist acts in every meaningful sense, as they deliberately target the most vulnerable, spread fear, and tear apart the social fabric. 3 years ago, war broke out in Sudan and an unimaginable nightmare began. Sudan is now the world's largest humanitarian and displacement crisis. Yet, the U.S. refuses to use its leverage with external actors fueling this war, especially the UAE who is arming the RSF's genocide.
