I just left the Islamic Center of San Diego where I met with some of our Muslim community leaders to chart our path forward to honor the men we lost in the shooting and fully support and protect our Muslim community and their sacred spaces. We’re in this together.

Every year, the National Association of Letter Carriers collects non-perishable food left at post offices and in mailboxes and delivers them to food banks and shelters. In San Diego, they partnered with the amazing local nonprofit Heaven’s Windows. So glad to join this effort!

Cathedral High School student Nikki is a hero. Last year, her empathy and courage helped save a stranger from taking their own life on the side of a road. I’m so proud of her and honored to recognize her as a CA-51 Outstanding Youth.

Grossmont College Library is currently hosting the “Americans and the Holocaust” traveling exhibit, which examines Americans’ responses to Nazism and war in the 1930s and 40s. Everyone should see it to learn from the past so we can make “never again” a reality.

My office and I are aware of the active shooter situation at the Islamic Center of San Diego and are in contact with local authorities. We don't have any details about a potential motive yet, but I'm devastated for those students, worshippers, and the Clairemont community. Everyone should be able to pray, worship, and learn in peace.
