I did not start my PhD as an “outstanding student.”
I nearly failed my first two classes. At a point I was afraid I was going to be withdrawn from the program.
My first year was rough. I began my PhD during the COVID lockdown, while travel restrictions meant I had not even set foot on campus. I was taking classes online from Lagos, Nigeria, trying to keep up with graduate coursework across time zones, erratic internet, and unreliable power supply.
I messed up one exam because my internet connection failed. I missed a few classes, or dropped out in the middle of them, because the power went out. I did not have much of a support system beyond a couple of classmates I managed to reach out to, who were also trying to survive the same uncertainty.
At the end of my first semester, I had taken two classes. I got a B in both. For international students, less than a B is failure. So, I passed … by a margin.
By spring, I had finally made it to the U.S. That semester, I got a B and an A-. And then, slowly, things began to turn.
From there, I earned straight As. I found my footing. I grew into the work, the lab, the science, and the community. I went on to have some of the most formative and meaningful experiences of my life.
Given how rocky the beginning was, finishing my PhD as the overall Outstanding PhD Student at The University of Texas at Dallas was definitely not on my bingo card.
But here we are.
I say this especially to anyone just starting out, or anyone who feels like they are already behind: do not let the beginning convince you that you do not belong.
Sometimes the story starts badly.
That does not mean it ends there.

People rarely think about staying safe online until something goes wrong. A strange email. A locked account. A bank alert at 2 a.m.
By then, prevention has become damage control.

@princess_yfe @yfe_embedded Comparison is the killer of Joy.
I have been in that place and still working to be better, many people look up to you even the ones that are doing well.

In the earlier parts of this year, my low self-esteem was high like crazy
(The irony 😂)
I don't know why, but I just felt there was nothing really going on for me
All my friends were moving forward, they were (and still are) growing, and they were all doing well
Why did I nau feel like my own life was falling apart?
It was like rubbing salt on injury
And a little bit disheartening
It wasn't until yesterday that I felt, "Princess, you actually have people." "Princess, things are finally looking up for you."
Before then, I felt people didn't rate me (I wonder why 😅)
And I felt what I was doing was so small "compared to this person"... "compared to that person."
But the funny thing is, the way I'm comparing myself to them is the same way someone is comparing themselves to me
Who was I fooling?
What I'm doing is small ke?
Abeg, come off it 😂
Anyway, it's a new month and a new half of the year
I'm going to do what I do best with God's Help, and show up like the queen that I am 😌👸🏽👑
And you should too, kings and queens 😉
(Also, if you haven't signed up for @yfe_embedded's embedded systems workshop, do so while there's still time 😉 bit.ly/4oT6EYM)
If you're looking down on what you've achieved this year, just write it down
Don't compare
Be grateful for your journey
And make up your mind to do better ('cause we all know we can always do better)
Happy New Month, beautiful people! 🤗
July and the rest of 2026 will be THOSE months
We've got this 👑
And God's got us 🩵🔥

Just got another lead on LinkedIn.
This is my way of saying: don’t listen to the noise LinkedIn is still very much alive and lucrative if you show up consistently with value.
A quick introduction:
I’m Gabriel Odusanya, a Cloud & Application Security Engineer. Every day, I focus on building secure systems from code all the way to the cloud.
I spend my time breaking down vulnerabilities, practicing real exploits in labs, reviewing code, and sharpening my skills in AppSec and Cloud Security.
I also tutor and teach cybersecurity sharing practical knowledge and career guidance on my YouTube channel to help beginners and growing professionals gain real clarity.
This journey has taught me that real growth isn’t loud. It’s consistent effort, better judgment, and learning from every mistake.
I document it publicly so others can learn too.
If you’re in tech or cybersecurity, we’re on the same path.
Let’s keep building.

My Achievements in the First Half of 2026 ✨
I started learning Cybersecurity in December 2024 with strong passion and clear goals. Just 1.5 years into this journey, consistency and discipline have taken me further than I imagined.
Highlights from the first half of 2026:
- Guided over 50+ people into Tech and Cybersecurity
- Built my personal brand (gabbytech) across X, LinkedIn, and YouTube
- Attended my first physical tech event Osun Tech Fest
- Spoke at multiple virtual tech webinars and preparing for my first physical talk in July
- Formed a major collaboration with @silverpenydr to train over 600 students and professionals in Cybersecurity
- Launched my first FREE Cybersecurity Cohort with over 300 students onboarded
- Grew my X account to 6,000+ followers
YouTube channel at 570+ subscribers
- LinkedIn at 288 connections
This is just the beginning.
Grateful for the journey so far and excited for what the rest of 2026 holds.
