On International Cheetah Day, my best wishes to all wildlife lovers and conservationists dedicated to protecting the cheetah, one of our planet’s most remarkable creatures. Three years ago, our Government launched Project Cheetah with the aim of safeguarding this magnificent animal and restoring the ecosystem in which it can truly flourish. It was also an effort to revive lost ecological heritage and strengthen our biodiversity.

I enjoyed serving on the panel, “From Data to Results: Building your Compelling Investment Case”, as part of Cure’s The X Factor: Healthcare Innovation Summit. Great moderator and co-panelists! Some takeaways: - To distinguish your pitch, connect the dots (unmet need, MoA, strength and relevance of preclinical or clinical data, contextualization of your data, overall competitive / commercial outlook, clinical / regulatory plan, IP, financing needs / plan / valuation, team) - When it comes to preclinical data, investors care about breadth of data, relevance of the models / controls, and contextualization – most co’s are weakest on benchmarking their data to others in the space - Don’t treat investors as a monolith; ask questions to understand a given firm’s strategy, perspectives on your space, process, and interest level - Experience is helpful, but VCs are also looking for transparency / credibility (e.g., consistency, deep knowledge of the space, CEO knowing key details) - The industry is going through a shift right now with many platform companies funded in boom times making the shift to program-based stories. This can mean down rounds but also a change in how the pitch is presented; lean into how you will generate meaningfully clinical data on your financing and spend minimal time on the platform. - Investors care not just about capital to value creation, but also time – particularly in this market. Ability to tranche to reduce capital at risk ahead of key milestones is also attractive - To be useful to your story, AI elements of your platform need to be proprietary and productive. - Reduce “the activation energy” – examples include laying out key commercial data (epi, price benchmarks) rather than leaving it for investors to Google this info; enabling investors to download decks from your data room so they can more easily share among the team / create investment materials; reaching out soon after the pitch for feedback - Many investments are made after the VC has followed the company for some time. So don’t give up; a firm that passes in this round could be competing for your next round
