Cliché shounen setup: a powerless MC learns how to gain power, then it turns into a cliché “save a family member” journey. The MC’s reactions are dull and unrealistic.

@moonpie_2405 I'm pretty sure there is an effort to minimize the comedy to lessen the tonal whiplash on the second half. In the manga Coco pouring washing water into the lake is framed in a comedic way but in the anime it isn't. The theft accusation feels the same.

#whaanimespoilers there's tons of stuff that I do love about the anime, but I have to say that I didn't like this change at all: they softened the noble girls' reactions way too much. In the manga, Coco, her mom and the village kids are literally accused of theft.
