@Recon1_ZA Momberg got 3 years for using a nasty word. Farmers got 14 years for putting a thief in a coffin for 30 seconds. Julius robbed banks, committed tender fraud, assaulted police officers, hate speech, racism, incited violence/land grabs with zero consequences.

If Julius Malema were to receive only a slap on the wrist, the precedent it sets is less about the technical legal rule and more about how the law is applied in South Africa. Equality before the law becomes conditional. If high-profile political figures repeatedly escape meaningful consequences, it entrenches selective prosecution and the law only exists on paper when the law depends on who you are. Sentencing is meant to serve deterrence, not just punishment. A weak slap on the wrist communicates that Julius' behaviour is okay and it would further normalize it while public confidence in courts take a bigger hit. From where I'm sitting, it appears that the law applies fully to the public, cautiously to politicians, and softly to those who can mobilise unrest.
