@adesertdryad That blue book has a ton of history and context, definitely. Obert's Introduction to Natal Astrology and his book on the planets are fantastic, and not too long. Brennan's The Astrology Podcast is honestly a great resource. Even Lewis's Discarded Image has a great introduction.

@EasternRedSkunk what would you suggest is better for beginners? looking more for historical practice and context not so much practical application

very confused by the kind of person who buys a book on Christianity and tarot and hermeticism and then gets mad when it talks about yoga sometimes

@adesertdryad We've only begun to translate a lot of ancient texts into English in the last 30 years, now that the discipline is kind of in chaos. The "white girl astrology" problem is, while uncharitably named, a real thing that requires careful, gentle navigation.

@adesertdryad It's complicated, but basically: loss of interest/failure to translate texts led to people borrowing haphazardly from other traditions to make a chimera that doesn't really follow the tradition developed over millennia. It's not a total loss, but there are (imo) grave errors.

@adesertdryad There are maybe better resources for complete beginners, but this is the best distillation of traditional astrology I'm aware of. Avoids the mess of 19th/20th century astrology, which is kind of its own animal. You might also look into Charles Obert, his introduction is great.

@adesertdryad My 900 page textbook on Hellenistic astrology (which I have read cover to cover) can be used as a blunt instrument, if you need one. :)

@adesertdryad In its defense, I found a good amount of it helpful in fleshing out the meanings of the cards, but sometimes it is 100% esoteric offroading.

@adesertdryad Yeah, the most common (and best) criticism of the book that I hear is that it's not actually a book about the tarot, it's meditations on Hermetic philosophy. Personally really rich for me, but not for everyone.

It assumes a familiarity of both Christian thought as well as esotericism. Having the former, I was not completely lost, but I suffered for lack of the latter. Some letters definitely adhered more closely to the cards than others and these were generally the ones I liked best.
