Ybor City Museum State Park is housed in the historic Ferlita Bakery. This bakery, originally built in 1896 as La Joven Francesca, was destroyed by a fire and rebuilt by the Ferlita family in 1923. The Ferlita Bakery continued operations for the next 50 years. #OTD in 1864 over 10,000 troops clashed at the Battle of Olustee, Florida’s largest military engagement during the Civil War. In 1909 the Florida legislature acquired land to build a memorial, and in 1912 the battlefield became the state’s first designated historic site. Last week, Secretary of State Cord Byrd visited the battlefield with Department of Environmental Protections leaders and Florida State Park staff to break ground for the new Olustee Battlefield Museum.
